JOB DESCRIPTION

DRAMA AND PREFORMING ARTS TEACHER

Shawnigan is seeking a highly motivated and talented Drama and Performing Arts Teacher for September 2022. The Drama and Performing Arts Teacher will spearhead the further development of performing arts within and outside the Shawnigan community, including through exciting programming and performances, marketing, involvement with admissions and possible development of summer programs.

Preference will be to given to qualified teachers who are a) academically multi-disciplinary b) can offer expertise, experience and enthusiasm in co-curricular activities c) are committed to contributing to our boarding campus and community and d) can contribute to the delivery of our strategic plan, Project Future.  

Previous experience of the British Columbia curriculum and/or Advanced Placement and/or internationally recognized academic curricula is required.

ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Reporting directly to both the Assistant Head, Academics and the Fine Arts Academic Department

Head, teachers are expected to:

  • Carry assigned load of classes while meeting all of Shawnigan’s prep, planning and reporting protocols as expected in the teaching profession; 
  • Contribute to the co-curricular program of the School through multiple afternoons of engagement with students in theatre production, drama, musical theatre, glee club or improv etc;
  • Inspire students at all levels to participate in various drama and theatre focused courses and cocurriculars;
  • Collaborate with other professionals on campus to design and deliver school performances (acting, singing, musical, dance, spoken dialogue etc.);
  • Collaborate with fellow department members and across departments to design and deliver content that challenges our students and prepares them for their post-secondary pathways;
  • Be available to support students in their learning through tutorials or enrichment opportunities;
  • Be involved in the full Shawnigan program and the delivery of “The Shawnigan Journey”; 
  • Work in partnership with Admissions Department when an interest in drama is expressed by a potential student;
  • Organize multiple opportunities for students to showcase their acting to the School, local and wider community through performances and competition involvement;
  • Inspire students to create, perform and lead.


REQUIREMENTS 

  • Only candidates holding certification to teach drama Grades 8-12 within British Columbia will be considered; 
  • Preference will be given to those with a BC Certification of Qualification; 
  • Must be eligible to work in Canada; 
  • Ability to adapt to changing enrollments in curricular drama by being certified in other teachables; 
  • Candidates should hold a post-secondary degree or related certification in drama or a related field; 
  • Experience teaching students from grade 8 to 12 in a variety of areas such as set design, acting, producing, stage management etc; 
  • A proven record of executing exciting theatre productions including plays, musicals etc. 
  • A proven record of encouraging students and practicing inclusion for all genders to embrace and find joy within drama; 
  • Experience with the technology of running a theatre space, or the ability to make industry connections to support the technology, set design etc; 
  • Proven record of professionalism, punctuality, flexibility, dependability, and reliability; 
  • Experience working with teenagers, preferably in a boarding / campus environment; 
  • Strong communication skill 
  • Experience organizing student performances; 
  • Experience preparing students for local and provincial competitions.
