Jerudong International School (JIS) founded in 1997, is in the small, beautiful country of Brunei Darussalam, on the Island of Borneo. It is a large, thriving Day and Boarding School with over 1650 students, from 2 to 18, offering a broad, liberal education in the best traditions of British Independent schools. Students come from 55 different countries, adding to the vibrant cultural mix of the school. Students are prepared for I/GCSEs, A Levels and the IBDP. A strong emphasis is placed on academic work. Many students have successfully gained places at top universities overseas including Oxford, Cambridge, Harvard, LSE, Imperial College, Australian National University, National University of Singapore, Melbourne and Cornell.

JIS is a member of HMC, BSA, FOBISIA (The Federation of British International Schools in Asia) and COBIS. There are almost 200 teachers, primarily from the UK but also from countries including Australia, France, New Zealand, South Africa and Brunei.

The facilities at Jerudong International School are genuinely exceptional. The purpose-built School occupies over 120 acres on a single campus in Jerudong, near the coast – a short 15-minute drive from the capital city. In addition to impressive conventional facilities such as Boarding Houses, traditional classrooms, Science Laboratories, Sports facilities (e.g. Olympic-size pool), Libraries etc, we have an exceptional Arts Centre, containing a 725-seat main auditorium; a 250-seat Studio Theatre; a state-of-the-art Music School (including Recording Studio and iMac Music Suite); a Dance Studio; Art Gallery; a complex for Upper Years students which includes a Learning Resource/e-learning Centre, a Higher Education Hub, a 250-seat Lecture Theatre, 27 specialist Science Laboratories, a stunning Design & Technology Centre, and countless ICT Suites, Art Studios, general classrooms and communal areas, including a dedicated Upper Years Canteen; and numerous rehearsal/teaching rooms. Boarding facilities are purpose-designed and built for the weekly boarding community of around 250 students.

The School is divided into three main areas. In the Junior School, Early Years Students (Nursery, Kindergarten and Reception) follow the UK Early Years Foundation Programme. Years 1–6 study the primary English National Curriculum, which has been adapted to reflect the international, South East Asian context in which the School is located.

The Middle Years (Years 7-9) present the opportunity for students to explore the range of subjects based on but not limited by the British National Curriculum in a comprehensive yet rigorous curriculum. Towards the end of the Middle Years, parents can, if they wish, enter their children into academic competitions such as that run by the University of New South Wales International Competition and Assessment for Schools (ICAS) in four subjects - Computer Skills and English. JIS students who have entered these competitions have performed superbly.

The Upper Years (Years 10-13) are a time for preparing students for the British external examinations and assessment, yet exam results are not the sole focus. We want to nurture and develop students with a passion for learning about the world around them. The final two years (Years 12 and 13) present the opportunity to study for the academically demanding pre-university programmes. We offer the Advanced Level General Certificate of Education (A-levels) and the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IB). Both programmes are respected and recognised by the best Universities in the world studied over a two-year period, and offer students a wide range of subject choices.

The Weekly Boarding community caters primarily for students whose families are employed in the British Forces, and the Oil Industry both in Brunei and over the border in Miri, Malaysia. Boarders arrive on Sunday evenings and go home on Fridays after school. The thriving Boarding community contains four Houses, each with a resident Housemaster/Housemistress, Tutor and Matron. The JIS Boarding structure is very similar to what would be found in a top UK Boarding School. Indeed, JIS is a member of BSA (The Boarding Schools’ Association). Teachers are actively encouraged to play a part in the vibrant JIS Boarding community, and many find it to be one of the most rewarding parts of their job.

The School operates an extensive co-curricular programme offering around 150 activities each term. The teaching staff primarily runs these activities though outside instructors assist with a few specialised activities. There is an activity to suit all tastes, from Music and Drama (orchestras, choirs, jazz bands, rock bands, participation in school plays etc) through to a wide variety of Sporting activities (Soccer, Swimming, Basketball, Netball, Badminton, Squash, Tennis, Cricket, Rugby, Tae Kwando, Horse Riding, Sailing and so on!). The Model United Nations is a very popular activity involving travel to participate in conferences in Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand. The Duke of Edinburgh (International Award) is another firm favourite, with JIS running one of the largest independent award centres in the world.

Students are encouraged throughout the school to give back and participate in the local community. This is particularly evident in the Sixth Form, where the Creativity, Action, and Service (CAS) component of the IBDP builds on the extensive projects programme offered to A-level students. Students are currently involved in many local projects and charities as well as projects in Sabah (Malaysia), Cambodia, Bali and Africa. We want to see our students thoroughly grounded in world events so they can really make a difference.
