JOB GOAL / PURPOSE:

The Upper Elementary School Counselor provides individual counseling, group guidance and counseling for students, and consultation, coordination and information services for students, staff and parents.

DUTIES / RESPONSIBILITES:

  • Provides social-emotional counseling to individual students, parents, and teachers.
  • Develops and implements UES guidance program.
  • Acts as a neutral mediator and/or student advocate for students exhibiting behavior problems.
  • Provides individual and group student counseling to promote the development of friendship, conflict resolution skills, behavior management skills, self-awareness, and emotional coping strategies.
  • Serves as a first point of contact and manages all documentation for child protection (safeguarding) concerns for all UES students.    
  • Provides intervention during crisis situations.
  • Assists all new students with their adjustment to school.
  • Refers students and parents to appropriate community resources.
  • Consults with parents regarding parenting concerns and problems that are related to the student’s well being.

·         Organizes and leads Parent Workshops and meetings.

  • Consults with teachers regarding student’s emotional/social concerns, developmental concerns, problem solving and behavior management and then develops appropriate strategies.
  • Assists teachers in the development of individual behavior management techniques.
  • Works collaboratively when appropriate and as needed, with EAL teachers, Learning Support teachers, administrators, teachers and teams of teachers to meet students’ needs.
  • Helps to manage and facilitate the Upper Elementary School Multi-tiered System of Support (MTSS) process.
  • Participates in Student Support Team (SST) to address individual student needs and as the “gate keeper” allocates case management responsibilities to the various departmental members of the SST (Assistant Principal, Counseling Department representative, Learning Support Department representative, EAL Department representative).

·         Maintains confidential student records.

  • Collaborates with all stakeholders to place all new and returning UES students in appropriate homeroom classes.
  • Notifies homeroom and specialist teachers about all new UES students joining their classes.
  • Coordinates and plans trial sessions or visit days for potential UES students.
  • Actively promotes the work of the Counseling Department throughout the Upper Elementary School.

  • Possess Professional School Counselor qualifications and experience
  • Be an effective communicator with teachers, students and parents.
  • Have the ability to problem solve under pressure.
  • Have the ability to deal with conflict resolution.
  • Have proven organizational skills.
