Job overview

We are looking for an exceptional, experienced senior leader to lead the establishment of two brand new academies in Lambeth: Harris Academy Clapham, a new 11-16 school for 1000 pupils; and Harris Clapham Sixth Form, a sixth form for 600 pupils.

Both schools are within 0.4 miles or two minutes’ drive apart. They will be led by one Executive Principal with one back office and site team and a single board of governors. This will enable the two academies to drive significant educational and financial benefits for young people.

Located within easy reach of both Clapham Common and Clapham South tube stations, these academies are at the heart of Lambeth and serve a disadvantaged but aspirational community. Your work will have the power to transform life opportunities where it is needed most.

The secondary school arises because of a shortage of school places and the sixth form due to a shortage of good places offering an academic curriculum causing some students to go out of the borough.

Working alongside Harris Federation colleagues who have wide experience in opening new schools, you will shape the ethos and culture of these new academies for the benefit of children in south London. The sixth form will open a year after the secondary school.

The post would suit an ambitious, experienced headteacher looking for unrivalled progression opportunities, and we offer the option to support you through our National Professional Qualification for Executive Leadership (NPQEL) programme. The course draws on the leadership expertise of Harris executive leaders and Directors as well as other successful MATs from across the country.

If you want to make a real difference to deserving young people, while working as part of a highly successful and supportive academy team, then this high profile opportunity could be for you.

Substantial & generous salary based on experience and expertise + Discretionary Performance Bonuses + Private Medical Insurance + Pension Scheme (TPS) + Relocation Allowance + Additional Harris Benefits

Why join the Harris Federation?

The Harris Federation is the leading large Multi Academy Trust in the country for primary and secondary education. We have built a proven track record in school improvement through rapid transformations, and we are at the forefront of developing a new generation of talented senior leaders.

Professional development and collaboration are key to our success, and we provide top quality training at every level from Beginner Teachers to Executive Leaders. We invest in our staff with coaching, mentoring, and a wide range of training programmes, delivered by our Teaching School Alliance. Two Harris academies hold Teaching School status and Harris also runs the highly successful London Thames Maths Hub, as well as working in partnership with a number of external organisations.

Harris is a Federation and not a chain; each academy is different, reflecting the particular aspirations and leadership style of its Principal. We are recognised for transforming the life chances of the children that we educate, and we have the capacity and track record to support your success as a Principal.

Our vision is that Harris academies work collaboratively in sharing school improvement strategies, and support one another as part of the wider Harris Federation. It is clear that our academies benefit from working collectively, which creates a powerful tool for raising standards.

We look for talented individuals who want to help transform education in London, and create exceptional places of learning. Informal conversations are welcomed and visits to our academies are highly encouraged.

The Harris Federation is a not-for-profit educational charity with almost 25 years of education experience in and around London. Our primary, secondary, all-through and sixth form academies have an international reputation for delivering a step change in education standards.

In joining a Harris Academy, you will be working with some of the country’s most exceptional teachers, support staff and leaders. There are frequent opportunities for internal exchange and promotion; our CPD is regularly described as Outstanding; and we have a package of staff benefits that rivals the most competitive of other professions.

Each Harris Academy is led and run by its senior leaders and has its own curriculum and way of doing things. What our Academies share, however, is a commitment to giving their children and teenagers an excellent education within a happy, caring and supportive environment.

There are Harris Academies in many different settings – inner city and suburban – but they are all within a maximum ninety minute commute from each other. This enables a highly collaborative structure, with on-call support from the Harris Federation.

You can find out more on our website (www.harrisfederation.org.uk) or by following us on Twitter (@HarrisFed).
