Job overview

We are looking for a dynamic, experienced, enthusiastic Finance, Business and Personnel Manager to join our school in January 2019.  This is a strategic position that gives you a prominent place on the school’s Leadership Team.  It will see you working alongside the Headteacher and Governors, leading on the finance, people and strategic asset function.  You will also ensure excellent joint working with other departments across the school and wider community.

Your core purpose will be:

  • Overall financial management to include advising Headteacher, Leadership Team and governors of strategic budget management
  • Ensuring that the school is able to provide a high quality education by effectively managing all non-curricular support aspects of the school, including its financial and human resources, and premises and the associated facilities
  • Being responsible for the on-going development and improvement of the school’s support services, systems and procedures
  • Strategic oversight of facilities to include information technology, catering, maintenance and cleaning
  • Co-ordination and oversight of Health and Safety for the whole school
  • Co-ordination and oversight of data protection and compliance
  • Co-ordination of people, resources and training and management of the relationship with Hertfordshire County Council

The successful candidate will be an integral part of the school’s leadership team and will be required to work at both an operational and strategic level. As a senior leader you will be expected to make a contribution to the life of the school. This will include some evening commitments. You will need to show a commitment to the values of exceptional education that lie at the heart of The Hemel Hempstead School. In addition you will need excellent communication and leadership skills and must be able to present effectively and clearly to all stakeholders of the school. You should have experience of leading and developing systems and teams and an ability to manage a demanding and varied workload. You should be experienced in finance, line management, the development of people and careers and be an excellent role model to the other members of the administrative team. You will be joining the school at an exciting time as we see the end of a substantial school expansion project. You will need to have the ability to manage your time effectively and to use your initiative.

The Hemel Hempstead School is a popular, over-subscribed school sited in pleasant grounds in the village of Boxmoor, close to national rail and road links to London.  An OfSTED inspection in May 2016 judged that the school continues to be good, stating:  ‘The school’s values of ‘Responsibility, Respect and Relationships’ are at the heart of the atmosphere at The Hemel Hempstead School.  You and your team prepare pupils to be courteous, considerate and capable young people, ready for the adult world’. There are 186 students in each of Years 7 – 11 and a Sixth Form of more than 230 taking a range of A Level and BTEC qualifications. The Hemel Hempstead School is a mixed, non-selective, non-denominational secondary school with sixth form in Hertfordshire, serving students from the age of 11-18. The secondary school, situated in Hemel Hempstead has approximately 1,139 students, including 209 in the Sixth Form. It’s sixth form is part of Partnership – consisting of three secondary schools. 

Formerly The Hemel Hempstead Grammar School, The Hemel Hempstead School opened in 1931, converting to a comprehensive school in 1971. In 2016, the school was identified as good by Ofsted.
