Job overview

Applications are invited for the Founding International Head of Benenden School Guangzhou, the first of five world-class bilingual schools planned in a partnership between CTF Education Group (CTFEG) and Benenden School. Opening in 2023, this co-educational day and boarding school will cater for 1,600 students from Kindergarten to Grade 12, offering a bilingual curriculum based on the Chinese National Curriculum and the international GCSE and A-level programmes.

Benenden is recognised globally as one of the UK’s leading independent boarding schools, nurturing its students to develop confidence, compassion, courage and courtesy as they go out and make a positive impact in the world. The Founding International Head will bring together Benenden’s commitment to A Complete Education with CTFEG’s vision for a “future ready” education that will prepare tomorrow’s leaders to thrive in a rapidly changing world.

This is an exciting opportunity for a candidate with a strong vision for education to drive innovation and embed an education that goes beyond the classroom and develops the whole person. The Founding International Head may be steeped in British education but will have an international perspective and will embrace the fascinating challenge of intentionally melding Eastern and Western pedagogical traditions with a cutting-edge philosophy for teaching and learning. The Founding International Head will have first-class communication skills and the gravitas to act as a credible ambassador for the school.

The successful candidate will lead the achievement of excellent academic outcomes within a resolutely holistic environment, meeting the needs of local families in Guangzhou as well as students recruited globally interested to pursue a bilingual education in China. The Founding International Head will be an experienced, people-oriented leader able to develop and inspire a team to deliver an exceptional school. She or he will possess curiosity, intellect and conviction and have the personal drive to successfully establish the first Benenden School in China.

A candidate brief containing consultant contact details, instruction on how to apply and the appointment timeline is available from www.odgers.com/82417

CVs and cover letters should be sent by 10am (BST) on 17th May, to Aaron Ashton at Odgers Berndtson.

Benenden School Guangzhou is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children, and applicants must be willing to undergo child protection screening appropriate to the post, including checks with past employers, the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) and a local police check.

About Guangzhou

Known also as Canton, Guangzhou is the capital of Guangdong province and one of the most prosperous cities in China. The city is located at the north of the Pearl River delta, covering an area of over 16,000 square kilometers. It has a history of more than 2,800 years, with the longest history among the international trade port cities in the world. The spoken language of Guangzhou is Cantonese - the same as Hong Kong, which sounds quite different from Mandarin. Canton cuisine is one of the four major food styles of China, in particular Dim Sum, a large range of small dishes that Cantonese people traditionally enjoy in restaurants for breakfast and lunch.

The school site is in Panyu district of Guangzhou, which is one of the future Central Business Districts of the city. As students progress through the school, they will enjoy world-class educational facilities, enabling specialist teaching in STEM subjects, advanced independent research through extensive library resources and the pursuit of a wide range of interests through first-rate sporting facilities.

We are looking for

  • Highly talented individuals who share our ethos of ‘a complete education’, enjoy working collaboratively and cross-culturally, and who share the same passion to contribute fully to the development of an outstanding new school.
  • Staff who want to join us in building a diverse, committed and highly supportive school and local community with a commitment to academic excellence.
  • Staff who are fully committed to continuous professional development and who want to make a real difference to children's lives.

What we offer

  • Every teacher will have both academic and pastoral responsibilities (within an agreed weekly teaching allocation) and as such will have the opportunity to contribute actively to (as well as take part in) the extensive co-curricular programme.
  • As a school we will value the input of all staff on our journey to becoming the most innovative bilingual school in China; so, if you want to be part of a dynamic and vibrant group of educators—this is the school for you.
  • As the school develops, there will be many opportunities for staff to take on new responsibilities - and promotion from within for those who are dedicated, capable and who embrace the Benenden ethos will be a real focus for the group and a chance to become part of the Benenden family.
