Job title: Graduate Assistant

Reporting to: Deputy Head, Pastoral and Co-curricular 

Introduction to the Role

Marlborough College Malaysia is looking for highly motivated recent graduates who are interested in gaining teaching experience within a school setting. The ideal candidate must be passionate, dedicated and resilient. He or she must be able to work in partnership with teaching and other educational support staff and have a positive attitude.

Graduate Assistants will be employed for the whole of the academic year, as this is a fixed term position until July 2019. Please note that new staff will need to be available for induction and orientation from mid-August 2018.

Academic Departments 

You should expect to be attached to one (or possibly more than one) academic department during your time at the College, allowing for a broad range of experience and exposure to a true boarding school environment. As such, candidates are expected to be flexible and may be required to work outside of their remit if required. If there is a particular interest that you wish to gain experience in, please inform the Deputy Head, Pastoral and Co-curricular who will seek to accommodate this.

In the mornings you will be expected to work under the specific direction of the relevant Head of Department(s). Your work may take a number of different forms and might involve acting as a support teacher in certain circumstances. 

On certain occasions you might be asked to help out in another area e.g. to provide additional staffing for an Outdoor Activities event or school trip.

You may be given the opportunity to plan and deliver lessons under the direction of a teacher. Primarily, though, it is likely to involve providing administrative support for the Department, developing teaching materials and acting as a classroom assistant if appropriate. Your particular contribution in this respect will be discussed on arrival.

Coaching of Games 

You should expect to be involved in the coaching of Games each afternoon of the week, including Saturdays. According to your level of expertise, you may be asked to coach a particular team for each of the major Games per term. The major Games are as follows: 

For boys: Rugby, Football, Tennis, Athletics, Cricket and Swimming 

For girls: Netball, Football, Touch Rugby, Tennis, Athletics and Swimming 

Graduate Assistants will also be asked to accompany teams to matches, many of which take place in Singapore; it is advised for Graduates to apply for a new full-size British passport before arrival so as to facilitate border crossings without disruption.

Cover, Duties and Invigilation 

Graduate Assistants will be a valued part of the Common Room and with this comes the obligation to provide cover according to the duties rota that is expected of all members of the Common Room. During examination periods you will also be required to invigilate on more occasions than would be considered the average for a teaching member of Common Room. These duties are designed to expose the Graduates to a wide breadth of boarding school teaching and essential for a future career path within this type of school environment.

Tutoring in a Boarding House

You will be attached to one of the boarding Houses on the campus and will do at least one duty night per week and some weekend duties. You may be given individual tutorial pupils to mentor, which is an opportunity for you to gain experience in the pastoral side of boarding life. Precise details of what you are expected to do will be decided by the Housemaster or Housemistress of the particular House to which you are assigned and discussed with you on arrival.

Additionally, you will be expected to assist with House outings. These usually consist of some form of Outdoor Activity and take place on Saturdays or Sundays during the year, these are fun activities and range from go-karting to scuba diving and are an opportunity for you to enjoy the many attractions that Malaysia has to offer. You are also expected to attend and contribute to special House events during the year and to provide support to the pupils.

Board and Lodging

The College will provide Graduate Assistants with a self-contained one-bedroom apartment in the staff condominium. The College will also provide all meals during term-time. You will have full use of your accommodation during the holidays as well as the term time. All utility bills are covered and medical insurance will be provided, as part of the College scheme.
