Job overview

Founded in 1933, The Beacon is one of the country’s largest independent day preparatory schools educating some 530 boys aged 3 – 13. Located near Amersham in Buckinghamshire, with well-resourced buildings set in beautiful surroundings, the School provides its pupils with an outstanding education which instils in them the skills they need to thrive throughout their adult lives, along with a lifelong curiosity and a genuine love of learning.

The Beacon’s ethos is underpinned by traditional values in an environment where kindness is the central thread to all aspects of the School’s approach. Whilst these values provide the bedrock, The Beacon has an ambitious outlook and never stops striving towards its aim of providing a world-class experience through a contemporary offering that embraces innovation and sets high expectations. This attitude encourages each boy to perform to his very best – in the classroom, on the playing fields, or in Music, Drama and the Creative Arts.

The Governors are now seeking to appoint an inspirational leader to succeed Will Phelps in April 2022 following his appointment to the headship of Cheam School. This is an exceptional opportunity at a truly exciting time as The Beacon plans to build upon its recent growth and enhance its offering with exciting plans for expansion and further improvement. The next Head will work in close partnership with a committed Board to ensure the School meets its aspiration to become the country’s leading preparatory school.

The successful candidate will demonstrate full alignment with the School’s educational aims and values, have a desire to nurture its strengths and clearly articulate these within a contemporary and compelling vision. The new Head will be genuinely strategic, commercially minded and have first-class communication skills alongside a proven ability to engage with, inspire and lead the whole Beacon community with a collaborative and empowering approach. The Governors encourage applications from inspiring, aspirational school leaders, irrespective of the number of years’ experience.
