Job overview

Committed to fostering a climate of openness and respect, Bedales is a dynamic, coeducational day and boarding school. Founded in 1893 as a humane alternative to typical public schools, Bedales remains progressively liberal in its approach, not for the sake of being different, but because it believes in the importance of a properly rounded and relevant education. Bedales’ breadth of vision and willingness to buck convention continues undiminished, as the school works to meet the challenges and opportunities facing today’s young people. Bedales comprises three schools located in 120 acres of South Downs National Park in Hampshire: Bedales Pre-Prep, Dunnanie (nursery - 8); Bedales Prep, Dunhurst (8 – 13); and Bedales Senior (13 – 18).

Bedales is now seeking an outstanding and innovative educational leader to take up the role of Head. The Head will deliver and develop a clear vision and strategy for the future of the three schools, providing an environment in which all staff and pupils in the community can thrive and achieve their full potential. They will work with the Governing Body to set the vision and overall direction for the school, analysing and planning for the school’s future needs and further development as an innovator in education. The Head will ensure the unique ethos and founding values of Bedales are sustained and that the relationships between staff, pupils, and the school community are the continuing priority.

The successful candidate will have a proven track record of achievement and innovation in academic management as either a Head or Deputy. They will have experience in successfully developing, implementing, and monitoring strategic plans in conjunction with Governors, as well as being able to manage human, financial, and physical resources. The successful candidate will have experience of the pressures and challenges of a boarding environment, and, crucially, will have the demonstrable capacity to develop warm, open and honest relationships across a whole school community.
