Head of Biology

Oundle School is one of the country’s leading HMC co-educational boarding and day schools, and enjoys a strong reputation for academic excellence supported by outstanding pastoral care.

A dynamic leader, manager and teacher is required for September 2018 to run a thriving department. The successful candidate will be a well-qualified graduate with a proven track record as an outstanding teacher with strong subject knowledge, who is able to participate in and contribute to the life of the School as a whole.

The Head of Biology will be responsible for ensuring that the education of pupils is upheld as a priority and that the highest possible standards in work and conduct are achieved throughout the department. They will be dynamic and committed as a classroom teacher and will contribute his/her own particular strengths and skills to the future development of the Department.

Biology is a core subject at Oundle, with all pupils studying it from First Form to Fifth Form. We have a strong tradition of supporting theoretical concepts through practical work, ranging from traditional experiments and field trips, to gene technology. The department is accommodated in SciTec with eight large laboratories and a spacious prep room, and has a projects room for Sixth Form use. The laboratories are fully resourced with a state of the art G-Storm PCR machine, gel electrophoresis tanks, colorimeters, and binocular microscopes.

Every year, we prepare pupils for their application to read Medicine with great success at top Russell Group universities in an increasingly competitive degree course. Part of this preparation involves dedicated lessons via the extension course programme, which helps pupils prepare for the BMAT and UKCAT, as well as Medical Society, whose members gain access to experts in various fields.

Oundle is a historic market town in Northamptonshire famous for its beautiful Georgian streets and impressive limestone buildings. The town has a spirited cultural life, with an annual international festival, literature festival, and frequent performances of nationally touring shows at the School’s Stahl Theatre. For those moving into the area, accommodation may be available at a discounted rate.  Other benefits include a salary on the generous Oundle pay scale.
