Job overview

The Role

We are seeking an ambitious and inspiring Head of Design and Technology to lead an innovative and dynamic department. Our Design and Technology curriculum is designed to offer our students a broad range of rich and deep cutting edge experiences in all elements of design and technological development. These include Engineering, Cookery and Catering, Fashion Design and Construction. Our philosophy within the department is to be ambitious, creative and innovative. We encourage out of the box thinking and are a progressive school that is climatised to change.

You will have a track record of improvement and some experience of leading staff, but your passion is imperative! You must have the capacity to create a clear strategy to enhance and develop the department in achieving academic excellence. We will give you the freedom, autonomy and support to adapt and review the Technology curriculum in line with our vision.

You will need to be someone who cares, both for our students and for your team. We pride ourselves on the unity of our staff and our departments. The Highcrest family is an important part of academy life. The right candidate will embrace the school’s visions and values to be an integral part of our team.

We believe that our Heads of Department have a pivotal role in inspiring and challenging pupils of every ability in every year to raise their academic standards, in promoting their confidence and self-esteem, and in securing year on year improving GCSE and post-16 results.

You may be an inspirational teacher looking to develop their leadership capacity and take the Technology department to its next stage of development. Not only will you be an excellent and experienced classroom practitioner, you will be able to teach within the subject area to sixth form level. Offering Child Development/Health and Social Care would also be an advantage, but is not essential. You will be successful in securing the highest standards of Teaching and Learning, implementing new systems and developing the curriculum with a priority to improve results. You will develop our current DT team and raise the profile of Design and Technology throughout the academy.

About Us

“The school has a warm and welcoming atmosphere” and “Pupils at The Highcrest Academy happily live up to the school’s motto of ‘aspire and achieve’.” Ofsted 2020

Our aim is to establish a culture of excellence throughout every element of our academy and move us from Good to Outstanding.

Just 30 minutes by train from Central London, The Highcrest Academy is the first All Ability Academy in the county of Buckinghamshire. It is a culturally diverse and vibrant school making it a fantastic place to teach. We have some students who will need all your support and yet we also featured in the national Ofsted report (2016) for providing challenge to the most able. Does this enthuse you?

There are approximately 1,000 students on roll, which includes the Sixth Form. A new building programme, just completed, comprises a brand-new Sixth Form Centre, sports facilities including a gym, and a new restaurant and coffee shop for both students and staff. We also have a thriving House system that brings our whole school community together.

In Return

Highcrest offers an innovative and extensive CPD package. No matter what your experience, we will help you develop into the teacher you aspire to be. A thriving school in the heart of the community, we also offer free on-site parking, staff recognition schemes and free gym to counter the “Friday Biscuits” and on-site coffee shop!

“Staff feel very well supported by senior leaders. According to staff, they feel valued because senior leaders are approachable..” ... Ofsted Report February 2020.

At Highcrest, we are committed to setting high expectations for the conduct of our pupils and believe it is crucial for there to be an established culture in which all are able to excel. We want all the children who come to the academy to enjoy their learning and to become thoughtful, articulate, confident and responsible members of society.

Our personalised curriculum is enhanced by numerous extra-curricular opportunities, community and business projects, national and international competitions and a thriving House System. This encourages staff and students of all ages to work together.
