Head of Drama

Salary: MPS/UPS plus TLR 2b – £4784 (London Fringe)

(£31,732 - £47,564)

Required from September 2021

Places please…… and: Action! We are looking for an inspirational and ambitious teacher to lead our Drama Department.  Drama is a popular subject at all Key Stages at St Mary’s, with established courses at both GCSE and A-Level.  Attainment is outstanding, and St. Mary’s drama students go on to be involved in prestigious theatre groups (including the National Youth Theatre) and to study at universities including Oxbridge and Russell Group, or train at elite Drama schools such as East 15, Arts Ed and Italia Conti.

The successful candidate would be expected to lead the Drama department and teach across the full age and ability range, supported by a dedicated and innovative cast of supporting colleagues. The school offers excellent professional development and guidance, with a highly effective and supportive CPD programme.

The Drama department enjoys superb facilities, with two large teaching spaces: a black box studio theatre, and a traditional school hall complete with stage and lighting. There are also dressing rooms and a well-stocked costume store. The standard of performance is exceptionally high with students frequently winning local and national competitions. Our school productions have included a dynamic mix of Shakespeare, Classic musicals and new writing and performers and backstage crew from all year groups. Productions in recent years include “Oliver!”, “The Sound of Music”, “A Christmas Carol” and “As You Like It”.

Our previous OFSTED inspection judged us as Outstanding in every category, and our most recent S48 Inspection (2018) also judged us as Outstanding in every area.  Over the last 4 years, exam results have risen at both GCSE & A Level.  Our ‘Progress 8’ score for 2018 was +0.61, which put the school in the top 10% in the country, and we were again ‘Above Average’ in 2019.  At A Level the proportion of A*-B Grades, as well as students enrolling at top universities, has increased significantly over recent years with school records regularly being broken.

The right candidate will have excellent academic and exam knowledge, and be ready to lead their own department, or looking for a change. Alongside the Head of Music, you will drive the development of Performing Arts at the school. You will be self-motivated, organised and confident. Students’ behaviour at St Mary’s is exemplary and parental support is outstanding, allowing an excellent environment to develop your career further among our reflective and supportive staff.

We are committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people, and expect all staff and volunteers to share this commitment.  A DBS disclosure is required for all successful applicants.  St Mary’s is committed to the equality of opportunity for all applicants, and we reserve the right to interview on a rolling basis, therefore an early application is advisable.

Closing date:  8th March 2021 10am

Apply in writing using the forms available on our website www.stmarys.net: Teacher Application Form, Consent to Obtain References Form, Rehabilitation of Offenders Form & Recruitment Monitoring Form.  Applicants are reminded that they should read the Notes to Applicants before completing an application. Please note only applications on St Mary’s forms will be accepted. Please contact Recruitment@stmarys.net to submit an application or for more information.

Welcome

St. Mary’s has a strong tradition of providing an authentic education which aims to deliver excellence for every member of our Catholic community. It is our mission to build on that tradition as we develop the school still further over the years ahead.

Our school is built upon an ambitious mission for each and every young person: to fulfil academic potential; to be fully developed in the personal, social and spiritual areas of life; to achieve excellence in every area of life; and to be underpinned by Gospel Values, enabling each person to value individuals and contribute positively to society. We work in partnership with parents and the wider community to ensure that this mission is accomplished in the lives of all our young people, and in so doing, enable those young people to live life to the full.

The aims of the school are:

• the formation of our young people according to Gospel values;
• the fulfilment of the potential of our pupils in all aspects of the curriculum;
• the personal, social and spiritual development of our pupils into responsible, generous and caring members of society;
• the achievement of all these within a culture of respect and appreciation for the worth and contribution of each member of our school and its wider community.

In 1896, five Sisters from the Belgian congregation of St Mary of Namur came to Bishop's Stortford and established a school with just 9 students.  These pioneering Sisters were the first to provide Catholic education for the district, and the school rapidly became a success. Their legacy is St Mary’s Catholic School, and as we look to the future with high expectations for continued success, their vision continues to inspire us. This is expressed in our aspiration towards academic excellence founded on Gospel values. In practical terms this also means the best possible pastoral care and guidance and the challenge and support of a broad range of spiritual opportunities which permeate through all aspects of school life.
