Since 1993, Xiehe Education has been offering a global education to students from kindergarten to Secondary school, consistently aiming to deliver an ‘East meets West’ and student-oriented education, and carrying out its holistic education program to train students to be ‘whole persons’ with high values, 21st Century knowledge and skills, and harmonious development.

Under the Xiehe umbrella, there are four education brands: Xiehe Kindergarten(XHKS)、Fortune Kindergarten(FKIS)、Shanghai United International School (SUIS) and Team Awesome International Youth Club (TA). Xiehe has a total of 44 schools and educates over 20,000 students. 4,000 of these students represent 40 nationalities, and amongst our 3000 teaching staff there are 480 foreign teachers.

Jiaoke Secondary School is  under the ownership of the Xiehe Education Group. The school is situated in the Min Hang District of Shanghai. The school, which enrolls students in grades 6-12, has been in operation since 2011.

Expectations of the role of a Head of Department at JK-EMW stream

- Reporting to the Head of Academics

General Responsibilities 

To be responsible for the day to day teaching and progress of each student in the subject and in particular to:

1. Build a relationship based on mutual trust, collaboration, confidence and respect with each member of your department;

2. Monitor the progress and development of students within the subject, updating the Head of Grade (HOG), Head of Academics and Senior Leadership Team (SLT) as appropriate;

3. Maintain and update the schemes of work to ensure that they best suit the needs of the students and expectations of the school;

4. Compile assessments in line with the school’s Assessment Policy;

5. Ensure that the merits and benefits of the subject are promoted across the wider community of the school through collaborative events.

 To mentor and energize members of the department so that they feel supported and enthused by their role within a thriving department.

 To attend Parent Teacher Meetings (PTM) each semester for each grade.

 To assist with the design of departmental documents that serve as sources of information for The Hub database and parent information evenings.

 To maintain a wide range of data on the progress of students with strategies for intervention for both high performing students and students of concern.

 To conduct weekly department meetings and attend any other meetings which may concern the development of the subject when requested.

 To monitor the punctuality, progress and behaviour of students in the department’s classes and challenge repeat offenders.

 To ensure homework is set consistently across the whole department within the parameters of the school’s homework policy.

 To keep students enthused and informed about activities organized by the department both on campus and on an extra-curricular level.

 To oversee the maintenance and replenishment of wall displays in your departmental area incorporating examples of student achievement and work

 To ensure exercise books (notebooks) and assignments are marked regularly and promptly by all colleagues with meaningful and purposeful feedback visible.

 To undertake such other tasks as may from time to time be required within the overall scope of a subject teacher or school middle leader.

 To promote the school ethos (4 C’s) via the school’s merit and rewards system and to promote and support whole school activities.

 To be responsible for the general condition and upkeep of the departmental suite of teaching rooms and resources and to help instill in students a sense of pride and responsibility for their learning environment.

 To provide maximum support to the HOGs and SLT in the administration and delivery of all requirements of School Curriculum.
