Job overview

Monkton is seeking to appoint a full time Head of Geography from September 2023 to teach throughout the senior school (Years 9 to 13) and lead a successful and forward-thinking department. As a dynamic and ambitious teacher, you are seeking to develop in a school which grows fruitful people through innovation and a commitment to professional growth, and which prioritises relationships over systems.

You will share our vision for fostering a love of lifelong learning, both for students and teachers. You will be passionate about delivering an excellent holistic education and have a commitment to individuals, seeing this as the basis for students to flourish. You will see education as lighting fires rather than filling pails as well as the vital part that a proactive pastoral approach plays in a student’s development.

In addition to teaching an academic timetable, all staff at Monkton are involved with the wider life of a busy boarding-ethos school. Co-curricular activities go far beyond those clubs and societies which are closely connected with a teacher’s academic subject and all staff play a rich pastoral role with both day and boarding pupils. As such, a full-time teacher will coach or support two terms of sport, or equivalent - eg CCF, drama, community service - have a tutor group, supervise an evening work period once a week in a boarding house, and run a co-curricular activity. Applicants should make clear in their application how they would see themselves contributing to school life in these wider ways; applications which focus solely on classroom practice are likely to be less successful.

The salary offered is in accordance with the Monkton Combe Teaching Staff Salary Scale.

About Monkton Combe School

Monkton Combe School is an independent, co-educational, mainstream, all-through school, catering for children aged 2-18. Situated just a mile from Bath, in Somerset, the school takes boarders and day pupils. It maintains a strong Christian ethos and is proud of its exam results and reputation for good pastoral care.

Monkton Combe School was founded as a senior school in 1868 by Reverend Francis Pocock, who had previously been shipwrecked on his return from West Africa. Just six boys joined his class in the Lent term, but the school expanded over the course of 20 years and in 1888 the junior school opened. Now 400 boys and girls attend Monkton Senior.

Monkton pre-prep was founded in 1937 and caters for 120 boys and girls aged 2-7. In September 2016 it moved from Combe Down to a new building on the prep school site.

Girls joined the school in 1992 when Clarendon School merged with Monkton Combe. Clarendon continues to flourish as a girls’ boarding house at the school.

Independent Schools Inspectorate report

“A suitable induction programme for new boarders includes the assignment of a mentor, information booklets and guidance from house staff. Boarders… were confident that there are staff they can turn to for help, and they appreciated the support available from senior pupils. Effective management and leadership are exercised both at senior management level and by house parents.”
