Job overview

We require for September 2018 an enthusiastic, innovative and well qualified Head of Geography, able to teach up to A level at this popular 11-18 selective boys’ school (with girls in the 6th form). The post should attract a first rate teacher and leader. Leadership is part of this role and we would expect the successful candidate, as a middle leader, to contribute to whole school developments, including teaching and learning, across the School.

We aim to consolidate recent developments and move the School on to higher achievements, while improving the facilities we provide for the students and staff. Recent developments include substantial work on the curriculum, teaching and learning and also on monitoring, evaluation and review. Considerable work has also been carried out in improving the School’s facilities with the recent completion of a £1.6 million Sixth Form Centre.

About King Edward VI Handsworth Grammar School for Boys

Handsworth Grammar School (HGS) is voluntary aided, selective grammar school in Handsworth, Birmingham. The school admits boys from the age of 11-18 and, since 1997, girls into its sixth form. Founded in 1862, it the oldest surviving selective school in Birmingham.

Lessons focus on both learning habits as well as learning the content of courses and topics. The ten learning habits Handsworth Grammar School aims to build include collaborating, questioning, listening, planning and distillation.

A new £1.6 million sixth form centre, offering students their own bespoke area, is linked to the Lodge, where there is a one-stop shop for careers advice and guidance and examinations advice and guidance.
