HEAD OF GEOGRAPHY

FT September 2021

Grey Court is a successful and oversubscribed academy serving a diverse community in an outstanding environment, situated in the London Borough of Richmond and in very close proximity to the beautiful River Thames and Richmond Park.

Graded Outstanding by OFSTED (for the second time) in January 2018, the school opened its sixth form in September 2014, with our cohorts of Year 13 students achieving continuously exceptional results in the first 3 years. In 2016 we became part of the Every Child, Every Day Multi Academy Trust and consequently, have further developed extremely strong working relationships with our partner schools. We are very excited about the future and the opportunities the MAT has brought to staff and students alike.

Geography plays an important role in the school and the subject has a high profile with large numbers of students choosing to continue the subject at both GCSE and A Level. We are seeking to appoint a highly qualified and innovative Head of Geography Department who will inspire our young people, promote a personal passion for Geography and ensure that all students excel in this subject. The ideal candidate will be one who is ready to lead a team, who is motivated to maintain the outstanding exam results we have and who has experience of teaching KS4 and KS5 Geography. We are looking for a candidate that has experience of curriculum development, who has the ability to integrate technology into the learning environment and be an active member of the Humanities Faculty.

You will have a drive to lead the Geography Department, ensuring that all students, at all academic levels, receive an outstanding experience in their lessons. The successful candidate will have a strong commitment to exceptionally high standards of classroom practice alongside a genuine regard for inspiring progress and quality of education of all our young people.

The Geography department and Humanities Faculty currently offers a wide range of opportunities at Key Stage 3 and 4 alongside our 6th Form provision. Results for all subjects within Humanities have exceeded national levels and we are an ambitious faculty with high aspirations for all our students. At GCSE we teach the AQA specification and at A Level we follow the Edexcel course.

As a National Teaching School we value the continuous development of our teachers and associate staff. We offer significant CPD opportunities such as Masters in Teaching and Learning and the Outstanding Teacher Program among many. We have a vibrant and caring NQT program for newly qualified staff which is mindful of the changing demands of the NQT whilst also facilitating the growth of classroom craft.

The following are desirable for the right candidate:

● An experienced teacher who aspires to become leader of an outstanding department.

● The ability to lead others and motivate them towards achieving great success

● Be able to teach Geography at all key stages, especially KS4 and KS5.

● An enthusiastic and driven person with the skills and desire to educate students about Geography and further increase uptake at both KS4 and 5.

● Have the ability to lead on the development of a broad and balanced curriculum that meets the needs of all our students.

● Have the ability to track pupil progress in the subject and use this to raise attainment.

● Demonstrate the potential to be an exceptional classroom practitioner.

● Have a clear passion for their area; supported by sound subject knowledge.

● Want the very best for all young people irrespective of background or challenge.

● Have an understanding of the importance of learning outside the classroom, especially Geography fieldwork at KS4 and KS5.

● Demonstrate an understanding of the importance of Geography across the curriculum.

We are committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children. All offers of employment will be subject to the successful candidate undertaking an enhanced DBS check via the Disclosure and Barring Service.

Grey Court is a popular, thriving and well established oversubscribed secondary school, situated in Ham, Richmond having 1,600 students on record.

Grey Court School is a mixed secondary school serving pupils between the ages of 11-18. Furthermore our Grey Court sixth form provides an outstanding post 16 education which includes A levels and vocational qualifications at BTEC level 3. Our results are consistently amongst the best in state schools in London. Each year we help students secure places at the top universities in the UK, including Oxbridge and other Russell Group universities. We consistently outperform local and national schools in terms of our results, with nearly 50% of all GCSE grades awarded at 7-9 and 38% of all A Levels at A*/ A.

Situated on 22 acres of tree lined grounds, our first class sports facilities include immaculately maintained football and rugby pitches, two sports halls and access to Ham tennis club with its own clubhouse.

Grey Court School was established in 1956 and converted to academy status in 2012. This London secondary school has been rated as outstanding in all areas in March 2013, then in January 2018 and now once again in February 2024.

Headteacher

Mr. Christopher Rhodes

Values and vision

Grey Court School’s main vision is to support and nurture students so that they have the confidence to achieve to a high level regardless of the challenges they may face. The Ham secondary school wants to work in a solid partnership, where staff and parents unite to ensure that students are supported both at school and at home, and are taught the values of honesty, self-reliance and responsibility. It is important to Grey Court School that students are presented with a varied curriculum and it provides facilities to appeal to all. Grey Court School holds a specialist status in Science, Maths and Computing, along with a Sports England accreditation, Healthy Schools status and Artsmark Gold.

Ofsted

Following our latest Ofsted inspection in February 2024 Ofsted concluded that Grey Court “is a school where all pupils flourish and are kept happy and safe”, and that "all pupils experience a high quality of education". This built on the platform of excellence established when our school was judged as outstanding in all categories initially in March 2013 and then again in January 2018.

Teacher Training

Grey Court provides a comprehensive professional development programme for trainee, early career and established teachers. This is further enhanced through our membership of the Wandle Teaching School Hub; an alliance of schools in the London boroughs of Kingston, Merton, Richmond and Wandsworth, formed to provide ongoing development for teachers at every stage of their career.

Early Career Teachers

We work closely with the Institute of Education and the Wandle Teaching School Hub to provide a two year training programme for early career teachers (ECTs). This highly structured, in-house programme involves close mentoring, support and encouragement of new teachers, and exceeds the statutory standards of the DfE’s early career framework. Many of our ECTs go on to build successful careers at Grey Court.

Ongoing Teacher Training

We actively encourage staff to continue their professional development. This could be through courses provided by the Wandle Teaching School hub, through our in-house training and learning sessions, or through more formal routes such as the national professional qualifications.

Initial Teacher Training

As part of the Grey Court teaching alliance we co-ordinate placements for trainee teachers in schools across south west London and Surrey. Each year we work closely with universities and the Department for Education (DfE) to place post graduate (PGCE) and School Direct applicants either in our own, or in other local schools.

Training School

As a training school we value the continuous development of our staff and offer a full range of professional training opportunities including in-house and cross-MAT CPD and national leadership programmes.
