The Post

UWCSEA has a vacancy for a Head of Dance and Teacher of Dance and Drama at its Dover Campus to start in August 2019.

The Head of Dance is responsible to High School Principal for the leadership, monitoring and review of the Dance programmes at UWCSEA Dover Campus. He/she will work closely with the Head of Music and Drama and the Middle School Leadership Team.

The Head of Dance is responsible for maintaining the inclusive vision of Dance on Dover Campus. The Head of Dance is also responsible for the operational management of both the Dance Performances and the IB and GCSE Dance courses offered on the Campus. He/she will also oversee the programme of Dance events, working closely with staff and students

in positions of leadership. As a Head of Dance and Dance teacher, the successful candidate will also support drama productions in the High and Middle School (as reasonable) with regard to choreography and movement.

The successful candidate will be experienced with demonstrable leadership strength. He or she will be an excellent communicator on the stage, on paper and in the all-important face-to-face conversations with students, staff and parents. He/she will be both creative and innovative and have a high level of resilience. The Head of Dance will be an excellent administrator and capable of managing his/her own budget. He/she will be empathetic towards students of all ages and able to work well and collaboratively with teaching colleagues.

Person specification

  • A good degree in Dance or a closely related discipline, and experience performing as a dancer. A recognized teaching qualification or certification are expected.
  • Teachers should be willing and eager to participate in the five key elements of a UWCSEA education: Academics; Activities; Outdoor Education; Personal and Social Education and Service
  • Academic expectations include enthusiastic participation in Professional Learning
  • Pastoral expectations include the leadership of a mentor group, unless the teacher is exempted due to other responsibilities.
  • On average the College expects a yearly contribution of two sessions per week in each season to Activities and/or Service.
  • The College expects that teachers will participate enthusiastically in the curricular Outdoor Education experiences which are relevant to their students and will also occasionally volunteer for holiday Outdoor Education trips.
  • A commitment to diversity and inclusion is essential alongside a willingness to adapt and develop pedagogy to meet the needs of our learners

  • Technical knowledge of all genres of dance as well as expertise in some of these genres.
  • Excellent teaching skills and the capacity to inspire students in the arts.

  • The initiative and energy to implement change.
  • A passion for the value of dance in developing the potential of students

In addition, the successful candidate will

  • Contribute positively to the collaborative culture of the Performing Arts and broader Middle/High School teams.
  • Construct learning experiences that challenge students, support the diversity of learners in each classroom and demonstrate a strong commitment to concept-based teaching and learning.
  • Ensure assessments support ongoing learning and provide timely, relevant and appropriate feedback to students on formative and summative assessments.
  • Demonstrate effective classroom management that shows an understanding of the academic, social and emotional dimensions of learning.
  • Keep parents informed about the learning of their children, and be proactive in communication with parents.
