To be responsible for the strategic planning, implementation and operation of all IT and communication services used throughout the school and to manage technical personnel, ensuring effective deployment to provide a high-quality service.

The overall aim is to develop, operate and maintain reliable, secure and fit for purpose IT, Audio-Visual and communication services that support and develop teaching and learning, events and administration across the school.

Key Responsibilities:

  • To manage the IT technical team, ensuring they are effectively deployed to provide a high-level service
  • To develop and maintain a customer service ethos in order that the IT technical team remains highly responsive to individual and institutional needs
  • To ensure that the IT technical team receive sufficient training and development to provide a good service and keep up with developments of the school IT systems
  • To identify, organise, support and, when required, lead relevant staff training sessions across the School
  • To contribute to the definition of the School’s digital strategy alongside the Assistant Principal – Whole School Innovation & Organisation
  • To formulate the School’s IT infrastructure strategy and to incorporate and assist the School’s digital strategy
  • To liaise with staff to develop services and introduce systems to help administer, implement and develop teaching and learning
  • To maintain an up to date knowledge of IT industry developments and carry out research into new systems and processes that could benefit the school
  • To provide advice to the Principal, members of the Senior Leadership Team and other staff when requested
  • To direct and manage the implementation of new IT and communication developments across the School, effectively integrating new systems and software into the School’s network and processes
  • To implement changes and policies as defined by United Learning, when appropriate
  • To plan, propose and manage a large annual budget
  • To manage the purchase of new hardware and software, ensuring that best value is achieved while following defined policies and processes
  • To liaise effectively with external suppliers and monitor the level of service provided
  • To manage the IT Support help desk to provide a highly responsive and well-regarded service
  • To supply 3rd/4th line support for the School’s systems and software
  • To manage the supply, installation and maintenance of the School’s IT systems
  • To ensure the reliability of the School’s IT and communication systems
  • To implement and manage the required IT security systems, ensuring that they are up to date and relevant
  • To assist with the management of site security systems
  • To implement systems and software that contribute to the School’s responsibilities for Safeguarding, advising and assisting the Designated Safeguarding Lead when required
  • To plan, implement, manage and maintain effective data backup systems and processes, taking into account current best practices and threats
  • To plan and implement disaster recovery processes, testing them as appropriate
  • To advise and participate in the School’s approach to relevant legislation, including Safeguarding, data protection and GDPR
  • To contribute to the School’s policies as appropriate, including the policies on Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) and Acceptable Use of ICT
  • To undertake the assessment of the relevant Health and Safety needs of users and provide the appropriate solutions to their needs
  • To ensure School-based systems comply with defined standards
  • To carry out any such duties as may be reasonably requested by the Principal or other senior members of the Senior Leadership Team.

The successful candidate will be likely to fit the following profile:

  • A genuine interest in technology and emerging technologies in a school environment is essential to the role
  • Networking (TCP/IP, routers, switches)
  • Extensive knowledge of Microsoft Windows (desktop and server)
  • Active Directory and DNS
  • Microsoft Office/Office 365
  • Virtualisation
  • Cloud services
  • Apple iOS and OSX
  • WordPress and its backend systems
  • Software management and installation
  • Anti-virus, encryption, web and email security and filtering software
  • Backup software and hardware
  • Audio-Visual equipment and its use
  • Interest in the use of AI (Artificial Intelligence) to support learning
  • Familiarity with appropriate legislation, including safeguarding, data protection and GDPR
