Job overview

Head of Cokethorpe Junior School required for September 2018

We are seeking an exceptional individual to provide leadership and management of this highly successful Junior School.    The postholder is the senior teacher within the Junior School and reports directly to and regularly with the Headmaster of Cokethorpe.

The Junior School:

Cokethorpe Junior School is a small, friendly and vibrant school that places a large emphasis on its pastoral care, sense of community and family atmosphere.

It is a forward-looking IAPs preparatory school and aims to provide an insight into a world that is rich and varied, exciting and stimulating and to put its pupils on a journey of discovery. As they progress through the School they are equipped with the necessary academic and social skills to enable them to develop into confident young people who are able to embrace all that life offers. Children make the most of being in an environment which encourages them to aim higher, try harder, and expect more of themselves.

The Junior School is set in 150 acres of beautiful Oxfordshire parkland, two miles from Witney and ten from Oxford. It occupies the elegant Mansion House that is at the heart of Cokethorpe School and retains its own identity, independence and distinct character, where the children flourish and are valued.

Self-sufficient in most respects, the Junior School benefits from having access to the Senior School facilities, especially the two all-weather pitches, Sports Hall and other sports facilities, performing arts spaces, science laboratories, ICT resources and the splendid Dining Hall. There is a dedicated Reception Class suite, Junior play areas, art room and music room.

Sport and The Arts play a strong part in the Junior School. Children participate in core sports, including competitive fixtures, and the Activities Scheme nurtures talents and develops interests with an impressive range of activities. There are musical drama productions each year where every child has a speaking or singing role. The art room and class displays are a riot of colour and creativity.

Qualified and enthusiastic staff, with a passion for excellence, teach a fully balanced curriculum with the focus on developing and maintaining high academic standards and providing intellectual challenges. Children receive vital foundations for study in small classes and in a positive and purposeful learning environment.

Whilst the National Curriculum is followed, the freedom to offer breadth is fully embraced. All children receive specialist teaching in Art, Drama, French, Music and Physical Education. There is an increasing use of specialist teaching as the children move through the Junior School. Mathematics and Spelling are taught in ability sets from Year 3. Latin is taught to children in Year 5 and Year 6.

About Cokethorpe School

Cokethorpe is an independent, day school for boys and girls aged four to eighteen, set in 150 acres of glorious Oxfordshire parkland, just two miles south of Witney and ten miles to the west of Oxford.

The School is unique in many ways; not only is our setting unsurpassed but we are also one of the only co-educational day schools in Oxfordshire with both Prep and Senior schools on the same site.

At the heart of our School is the belief that our pupils dig deeper, reach higher, and stretch further when they feel the embrace of supportive peers and the oversight of enthusiastic and experienced teachers who know when and how to challenge them. This sense of community is fostered by the close-knit House system where young people develop a deep sense of belonging; it is forged around the close, working relationship of the small classrooms, where teachers engage the intellect, encourage students to grapple with ideas, and teach lifelong respect and humility.

We are a happy, strong and vibrant community, in which individuals are generous of spirit, inspire friendship and support one another. Our teachers, pupils and parents value the School's small class sizes and emphasis on delivering liberal educational principles in an environment that celebrates individual achievements equally, whatever their passions might be.
