Job overview

September 2021

Introduction

Hill House seeks an enthusiastic, well qualified Special Educational Needs teacher, with a Level 7 qualification to lead and manage the school’s Learning Support Department from September 2021. The position could be full or part time.

The School

Hill House is the leading co-educational independent school in South Yorkshire. It is an exciting and expanding school of some 700 children from age 3 to 18, where teachers can teach and children can learn. The school was founded in 1912 and occupies a splendid site 5 miles north of the charming market town of Bawtry, and within 6 miles of Doncaster.

In an £8 million move, the school relocated from an urban site in September 2008, and now occupies stunning facilities, harmonising the history of an outstanding campus with new, purposely designed 21st century facilities. Since then, a multi-million pound development project has seen the building of a new Sixth Form Centre, Music School, Sports Grounds and Dining Hall.

Academic results are the best in the area, with 37% of GCSEs being awarded 8/9 grades this year with 58% grade 9-7, and 48% of A levels being graded at A/A*. They are improving every year, and compare very favourably with other independent schools; expectations are rightly high, and we are ambitious for our children.

The culture, facilities and shops of Bawtry, York, Leeds, Harrogate, Nottingham and Sheffield are all within easy reach. The school is surrounded by many beautiful villages in the countryside of South Yorkshire, Nottinghamshire and North Lincolnshire, and property prices are very reasonable indeed. Doncaster itself is a thriving and historic town with excellent communication links, little more than 90 minutes by train from Kings Cross.

The Position

The Learning Support Department is well resourced, highly successful and greatly valued by parents and pupils.  As SENCO and Head of Learning Support, you will manage all aspects of the provision of excellent learning support for pupils across the school in all key stages. The Department has an office and 2 classrooms, and is staffed by the Head of Learning Support and a SENSO.

The successful candidate will be required to provide and oversee support for pupils with Special Educational Needs or Disabilities in small groups or on a 1:1 basis from key stages 1 to 4 as well as ensuring informal ongoing support is available to older pupils approaching public examinations.

As SENCO you will also play a vital role in liaising with the Examinations Officer to ensure appropriate access arrangements are in place and you should be qualified and confident in assessing pupils for such arrangements.

The right candidate could also have the opportunity to work with EAL pupils.

Please see the attached Job Description for fuller details.

Salaries are competitive, and this post commands an attractive remuneration package, including reasonable relocation expenses where appropriate. The school contributes to a company pension scheme.
