Head of Mathematics

Woking CollegeWoking, Surrey

The Role

The College requires a full-time Head of Mathematics to oversee the leadership and management of the department within the College.  We are looking for an inspiring and dynamic candidate, with a passion for maths, to join our successful and growing College.

This is an exciting time for our rapidly expanding, highly successful Sixth Form College, and this role has become available due to the promotion of the current incumbent.  Applications from Teachers in Schools and Sixth Form College sectors are welcome.  A full mentoring programme is organised to introduce all new staff to sixth form college systems and procedures and to support and encourage professional development.  We are looking for an exceptional candidate.

We expect high performance from all our staff and are looking for an impressive individual to inspire College students.  Candidates should demonstrate their ability and suitability to both the role and the culture of the College.

The Department

The Maths department is a large, successful area of the College.  Student recruitment numbers are good and the department teaches over a third of all students at Woking College and is pro-active in broadening the curriculum to meet the needs of students.  The department offers:

  • Functional Skills Mathematics
  • GCSE Mathematics
  • “Core Mathematics”
  • A Level Mathematics
  • A Level Statistics
  • A Level Further Mathematics

With the range of courses offered by the department, and the number of students we teach, there is opportunity for specialising or teaching a full range of mathematics. As the department prepares for specification changes, we are also working collaboratively to develop a problem-solving approach to teaching A Level Mathematics.

The department hosts a range of extra-curricular activities which have included trips to the Pirbright Laboratories, participation in the UK Maths Challenge, visits to universities, visits from lecturers at local universities and a Maths Club, where we can explore, with some of our most dedicated and capable mathematicians, elements of mathematics not covered on the current curriculum.   In addition, our students have placed a high value on the support they receive from the department through lunchtime support sessions, “Exam Jam” classes, the Easter revision conference and one to one sessions.
