Manor House pupils participate in musical activity with enthusiasm and it is the responsibility of the Head of Music to develop their interest by detecting and nourishing individual talent and by encouraging each child to fulfil their musical potential.

The successful candidate will involve all children, from the youngest to the oldest, in musical activity and encourage them as individuals. This will include singing, music composition and ensuring they are made familiar with and enjoy the tradition of hymn singing. 

We are looking for an outstanding role model for our pupils to provide maternity cover. Flexible working can be considered for the right candidate. For full details please see the application pack. 

  • Ensure that all pupils realise their potential in attainment and wider achievement through high quality teaching and learning experiences.
  • Monitor pupil progress and where necessary provide intervention in order that those taking GCSE music achieve the highest possible grades.
  • Develop a range of stimulating and relevant courses for all the classes within the school.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of these courses and to oversee the provision of assessment procedures in accordance with the school’s policy.
  • Identify resources needed to support learning, teaching and excellence in music.
  • Advise and co-operate with the SLT on the preparation and development of study, teaching materials (including hymn books), teaching programmes, methods of teaching and assessment and pastoral arrangements all with the National Curriculum where applicable.
  • Undertake a designated programme of teaching.
  • Record and report on the development, progress and attainment of pupils.
  • Recruit and rehearse the school choirs (student, parent and staff), orchestras and ensembles.
  • Provide accompaniment in church and assemblies for weekly services.
  • Organise music for the various occasions such as the Prep department Nativity play and Summer Assembly.
  • Co-organise the annual House Arts Competition, direct the music for the annual Prep Production and organise rehearsals for occasional music concerts.
  • Organise piano tuning at regular intervals to ensure concert level at all times.

Leadership;  

  • Manage and lead the Music Department and liaise with other Departments to ensure that Music enriches the experience of pupils and maintains its role as a subject of major importance at Manor House. 
  • Oversee all peripatetic and permanent staff in the Department and to engage any new peripatetic teachers with suitable qualifications as the need arises (Admin support is provided for the weekly timetable). Liaise with the Headteacher and other Departments (principally Drama) to produce and direct a major Senior school musical production every year.
  • Oversee the school’s participation in external examinations, principally GCSE and ABRSM.
  • Liaise with the Headteacher and other departments to produce particular services throughout the year (principally the Carol Service, the Easter Eucharist and the Leavers’ Service), and to organise other services as directed by the Headteacher.
  • To lead regular whole school Music Assemblies to enhance the pupils’ appreciation of music. 

Pupil Support;

  • Employ a range of strategies and methods of differentiation to take account of pupil learning styles, abilities and previous experiences.
  • Support pupils with special educational experiences.
  • Contribute to the development of school policy in relation to behaviour management of pupils.
  • Work in partnership with colleagues, parents, other specialist agencies and staff in other schools as appropriate.
  • Be aware and follow the school’s policies and procedures, especially those relating to safeguarding and child protection, behaviour and Health and Safety.

Manor House School is nestled in seventeen acres of magical gardens, woodlands and sports fields that makes our beautiful school a very special place to learn and grow.  The magnificent country house, complemented with state of the art educational facilities, is brought alive by the creative and positive energy of the girls who choose to learn here. We are a selective independent school for girls aged 2-16 years (with boys in the Nursery and Kindergarten), located in the village of Bookham, Surrey.
