Job overview

A well-qualified, efficient, enthusiastic and inspirational teacher is sought for the role of Head of Physics at Walthamstow Hall after the retirement of the current incumbent.

This is a well-organised and high-achieving department, which aims to nurture the students’ knowledge, skills and interests in all matters related to Physics.  Applicants should be able to teach Physics from Years 7 to 13, including preparation for Oxbridge entrance.

The position would suit an existing Head of Department or an ambitious teacher looking for a leadership role.

At Key Stage 3 our Physics courses are designed to develop in the girls both practical expertise and theoretical understanding, aiming also to instil a sense of “awe and wonder” and an attitude of curiosity and scientific enquiry.  During Years 10 and 11 all girls take an Edexcel International GCSE course, the majority choosing to follow the Separate Science course with a smaller number opting for the Double Award Science qualification. Examination results in these courses have improved almost year on year, reaching our best ever in 2017 with 88% of grades at A* or A.

The Value Added each year is at least the equivalent of one full grade, reflecting the priority given by the department and school in general to the progress and needs of every individual.

The number of students studying Physics in the Sixth Form has also increased over the last few years, with many subsequently choosing Engineering or Physics-related subjects at university, including a number gaining places at Oxbridge.  In recent years, 88% of girls have achieved A* to B grades at A Level.   A few have successfully taken part in Physics Olympiad competitions.

In addition to the Head of Physics, teaching staff consists of one full-time member of staff, who is also the Director of Studies, and three part-time teachers.  We also have an experienced Physics Technician.

Walthamstow Hall is a leading selective school for girls with a distinctive ethos.  Inspiring teaching, an extensive extra-curricular programme, exceptional facilities and a strong sense of community lie at the heart of our 178 year success.

The School has its own salary scales, significantly above the maintained sector.

Full details and an application form are obtainable from the Headmistress's PA, Ms Kate Lippiatt: Email: hmpa@whall.school;  Telephone 01732 451334
