An excellent opportunity to develop your practice in an outstanding school

Required September 2019

We are seeking to appoint a primary specialist or secondary English teacher who is an outstanding practitioner with a passion for reading and the drive to ensure that all students leave school able to read well. Our aim is to foster a love of reading, while increasing students’ confidence, skills and literacy, as well as helping them to develop a rich vocabulary. You would be leading our new and innovative Reading and Literacy Department, which works alongside our highly experienced and excellent English Department. Literacy and Communication is the school’s leading priority and the Reading and Literacy Department sits at the heart of this. The teaching of reading is now embedded as part of our curriculum offer at KS3. Currently, our Key Stage three curriculum is delivered in Years 7 and 8. As well as reading, you would also have responsibility for the teaching of literacy within English. You would help to shape the curriculum and provide CPD for staff in order to build on students’ skills and knowledge from KS2.

As Head of Reading and Literacy you would work with the Assistant Headteacher responsible for Literacy and Communication and alongside our Head of English. We have a dedicated English department, which prides itself in delivering a broad and challenging curriculum. In this role, you would be working with a mixture of small reading groups, as well as some whole classes. This is an exciting opportunity to inspire students to read and have a significant impact on their futures. You will have the opportunity to provide our young people with the web of knowledge and skills they require to fully access the wider curriculum. We have a comprehensive CPD offer along with this post.

Park High is an 11-18 mixed multi-ethnic comprehensive school of almost 1600 students, situated in the London Borough of Harrow. There are very high achievement levels and excellent facilities.  Ofsted (2013) judged the school outstanding in all areas and in early 2014 we were designated a National Teaching School. Staff development is widely regarded as “leading edge”: we have strong partnerships with universities and other higher education institutions and we actively support our staff in pursuing Masters and other higher qualifications.

We welcome visits from prospective candidates who wish to come find out more about our reading team.

Closing date:  28th January 2019

Details and application forms may be downloaded from the school website or may be made online.

The school is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people, and the successful applicant must provide satisfactory references and will be subject to an enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service check.
