Job overview

Horizons Academy Bexley is an all through alternative provision school which works across three sites, the main site in Abbey Wood as well as two satellites in Welling and Bexleyheath.  The school caters for pupils who are either permanently excluded or at risk of exclusion age 5-16 and offers a broad, aspirational curriculum as well as having a strong emphasis on cultural capital and behavioural interventions to ensure that all pupils are able to either reintegrate successfully into mainstream schools or other suitable provisions or move onto positive pathways at the end of Key Stage 4.  Partnership working with the local authority has led to recent investment in a new site for our Medical Needs Department who have moved into a purpose built provision in Bexleyheath which is in close proximity to another of our hub schools and benefits from extensive specialist facilities and expertise.

This is an exciting time to join our team following the appointment of a new Executive Head Teacher and expansion to all three schools within our federation.  We are looking to appoint an inspirational and innovative Head of School from April 2021 who can build upon our successes and achievements and secure the best possible outcomes for our pupils, increasing reintegration opportunities, expanding our intervention offer and leading a team of committed staff across a number of areas with the ultimate aim of creating a cohesive single team of staff.

The successful candidate will need to have the skills and ambition to promote excellent teaching and learning and be an enthusiastic and committed leader to drive forward these aims.

In this exciting role you will benefit from a dedicated team of staff, governors and involved parents. Horizons belongs to a supportive wider organization, London South East Academies Trust, and benefits specifically from being part of the wider New Horizons Hub which brings together Endeavour Academy (secondary SEMH), Aspire Academy (primary SEMH) and Horizons Academy (all through alternative provision) which offers a high level of peer support at all levels.   Opportunities to collaborate at local level and across the trust are extensive and allow for fantastic ways in which to share good practice and offer training and development for staff.

New Horizons promote aspirational educational opportunities, supportive transition experiences and the fostering of positive relationships which enable our pupils to thrive and make outstanding progress, both in their learning and their personal development.  We are an organization which always seeks new challenges and strives to be the best it can be in order that our pupils achieve their goals and experience success.

Please see our website for more information about our schools (www.newhorizonsfederation.org.uk).  If you would like to find out more about this post, please contact the Executive Head Teacher, Beverley Evans on 07456 223867.  Visits to the school are welcome.

Closing Date:  8th November 2020

Interviews: Week commencing 9th November 2020

About Horizons Academy Bexley

Horizons provides high quality support to pupils in Key Stages 1–4 who have been permanently excluded (or are at risk of exclusion) from mainstream school.

We focus on early intervention, offering a range of services from short term respite to longer term education for students in KS4. Our expert team works intensively with post-16 pupils to secure destinations whilst providing ongoing support. This helps ensure that all pupils can maintain their educational placements, training programmes and/or employment.

Our aim in Key Stages 1–3 is to re-integrate pupils back into a mainstream or specialist school via our ‘Refocus programme’. We work closely with external agencies and our partner schools to identify the needs of the child and develop the child’s own ability to learn, so that they feel confident about being in the classroom.

We have created an environment and developed a curriculum which supports our pupils to become well rounded citizens and able to productively contribute to the community. We want all our young people to feel confident about their future and in their own ability to live a successful, meaningful life.
