We are looking to appoint an exceptional and inspirational leader for the role of Head of School, Birtenshaw School Merseyside. The School is registered for 50 pupils with SEND, particularly autism and severe learning disability. 

About Us 

Birtenshaw is a company limited by guarantee and a registered Charity Group. We were originally established in Bromley Cross, Bolton in 1956. Birtenshaw provides a dynamic range of education, care and therapy services for children and young adults with Special Educational Needs and Disability, including Autism Spectrum Conditions. 

We are currently exploring the expansion of Birtenshaw School in Bolton, including the creation of an early years’ service, and are due to open a brand new, bespoke special school in Liverpool in January 2018. 

Our aim is to brighten lives and build better futures for everyone we support, through a person centred approach based on total communication and ordinary life principles. 

About this Role 

This is a fantastic opportunity for someone with leadership experience in their current/previous roles to take on a new challenge leading a new school in brand new state of the art facilities for children and young people with Special Educational Needs and Disability, in particular autistic spectrum condition and severe learning disability. 

Working in partnership with the Deputy Chief Executive: Operations the newly appointed Head of School will be expected to provide outstanding leadership of the school, promoting and securing a foundation in order to achieve high standards in all areas of the school work.

As Head of School you will be responsible for setting high aspirations and maintaining the highest standards of provision by creating a comprehensive development strategy that will provide staff with direction and encourage students to aim high. 

Supported by the Deputy Chief Executive: Operations and School Governing Board you will provide strong leadership to the school to ensure delivery of outstanding education.

Birtenshaw School Bolton is a non-maintained special school for children and young people aged 3 to 19 years old with special educational needs and disability. Our vision is to “Transform Lives” by ensuring that pupils receive the same learning and social opportunities as other children and young people; which we achieve by providing facilities and a creative curriculum tailored to meet their needs.

With dedicated staff, a unique approach and purpose built facilities; we provide a supportive, safe and happy environment where all children and young people make progress regardless of ability level. Occupying a building in Bromley Cross, Bolton specifically designed to be autism friendly, our school provides a creative curriculum, specifically designed autism-friendly facilities and a range of complimentary health services and therapies. The school has full Autism Accreditation from the National Autistic Society and provides education for children and young people with a learning or physical disability, a diagnosis of autistic spectrum condition and / or Complex Health Needs.

All pupils have an Education Health and Care Plan and the targets set within these plans determine the curriculum pathway for pupils to ensure their learning is designed to meet individual long term aspirations. This is achieved through a broad and balanced, creative curriculum which is delivered by fully qualified teachers and facilitated by experienced Learning Support Assistants.
