Job overview

Come and join our outstanding team at Outwood Academy Carlton!

Achieving Academy status in February 2016 as part of the Outwood Grange Academies Trust, Outwood Academy Carlton is going from strength to strength. Based in the attractive village of Carlton, we offer an exceptional education and are enjoying significant improvement across every key measure and in every subject. In December 2015, Ofsted noted that “senior leaders have a clear vision for the school” and that “all aspects of school life have been transformed”, with the result that “pupils feel well cared for”. You can help us take things to the next level.

Following the promotion of our current Head of Science, we are excited to be looking for a dynamic, forward thinking Head of Department who is inspiring and an energetic leader with a real passion for Science. You will be a motivated, enthusiastic and driven individual who has the skills and determination to make a significant difference to the lives of our students and share our single goal of ‘Students First’.

We offer an exciting opportunity to lead a team and department. You will have leadership experience, be determined and driven and have the ability to transform students’ lives. You will work alongside a fantastic team to continue to achieve the highest possible outcomes for students irrespective of their backgrounds or starting points.

Outwood Academy Carlton is situated in North East Barnsley and is easily accessible from South and West Yorkshire, with Wakefield, Sheffield, Doncaster, Huddersfield and Pontefract all within commuting distance. We are just 5 miles from the M1.

In December 2015, our fantastic work was recognised by Ofsted, when they moved the school from ‘Special Measures’ to ‘Good’ (in all areas).

Outwood Grange Academies Trust is nationally recognised as one of the highest preforming academy trusts in the country.

Our results last year showed a phenomenal increase of 41% from 2015 to 70% in 2017 for students achieving 2 GCSE’s in Science at Grade C or better. Science is rapidly improving and a high performing department and the breakdown from summer 2017 results is as follows:

1 Science at grade C or better = 76%

2 Sciences at grade C or better = 70%

Biology C+ = 100%

Chemistry C+ = 98 %

Physics C+ = 100%

Under the new government progress 8 figures Science achieved +0.3 in 2016 and +0.4 in 2017.

The role of Head of Science at Outwood Academy Carlton would be ideal for either an experienced Head of Department or someone looking to make that next step. You will be supported extensively by a team of Science Directors allowing you to strategically lead the department, whilst having the support and advice from the director team. This is a great opportunity for the right candidate to lead a dynamic department and be pivotal in shaping the department on its journey to outstanding.

If you join Outwood Academy Carlton, you will be joining the Outwood Grange Family of Schools and will therefore enjoy so many opportunities, whether you wish to stay in one school or work across the Family of Schools. When you are ready to move up, you will not need to move on. All of our Academies have one common goal: to give children, irrespective of ability or circumstances, the chance to succeed. We are passionate about recognising the potential of both children and staff, and we do whatever it takes to transform futures.

This is a critical appointment for the Academy and is an exciting opportunity for you to move your career onto the next stage.

If you are interested in this role, we invite you to contact Aalok Kanwar, Associate Director of Science, (a.kanwar@carlton.outwood.com) if you have any questions, and you would be very welcome to visit, by arrangement, to see lessons and witness the rapid improvement that has already occurred.

To apply, please visit: www.outwood.com > Vacancies. Alternatively, contact Janette Haworth by email: j.haworth@carlton.outwood.com

Closing date: Midday on Monday, 5 February 2018.

Interview date: Wednesday, 7 February 2018.

Outwood Academy Carlton is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment. The successful candidate will be required to complete a DBS form in line with Section 115 of the Police Act 1997.

We are delighted that in its latest report, Ofsted noted ‘staff morale is high’ and that we offer a ‘well-considered programme of professional development’ which ‘ensures that staff continuously improve their skills and knowledge.’

We believe that learning should be both enjoyable and enriching. We are innovators with a knowledge-rich curriculum, designed to personalise learning for every student, helping them to reach their potential.

With a holistic view of education, we value vocational, practical, creative and academic excellence equally, creating an environment where every student can shine.

We are also proud to have been awarded Bronze Status by the Carnegie Centre of Excellence for Mental Health Award.

As we continue to improve, help to take us to the next level.

The Outwood Family of Schools pride ourselves on fully supporting colleagues within the Family both professionally and personally.

We work hard to ensure we reduce workload on staff, allowing more time in the classroom to put our vision of students first, raising standards and transforming lives into practice.

As a founding Trust of the National Institute of Education (NIoT), we will actively invest in your future through working closely with the Outwood Institute of Education and NIoT to offer access to a wide range of CPD opportunities, with all teaching staff receiving a minimum of two hours of CPD each week.

We also offer a generous employment package with a whole host of staff benefits, including family friendly policies, enhanced occupational benefits available (such as maternity, adoption and parental leave) with no qualifying period, funded CPD for qualifications up to and including Masters level plus other exclusive benefits including a partnership with car leasing company, Synergy.

All academies within the Outwood Family have gained the IQM Inclusive Schools Award with 18 having Centre of Excellence status and one holding Flagship status.
