Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an exceptional individual to join Forest School in the role of Head of Science. The successful candidate will lead the development of science in a new, state-of-the-art building which houses the departments of Biology, Chemistry and Physics.  The Head of Science is required to be an outstanding teacher, leading by example, and also to manage and monitor the delivery of a curriculum which is very popular among pupils. The department is very well resourced and consists of three Heads of Department, 18 teachers, and six technicians.

The science faculty occupies a central place in the academic life of the School with the teaching of science being practically orientated, with an emphasis on skills and processes. A balanced science programme, incorporating most of the features of the National Curriculum, is taught to pupils in Years 7 & 8. Each class has one science teacher. In Year 9, pupils are taught by three specialist teachers and follow a programme of study in preparation for their Science GCSEs. In Year 10, they choose either Double Award Science or any two or all three, of Biology, Chemistry and Physics, following the Edexcel IGCSE course. At A level, both Biology and Chemistry follow the new OCR specifications and Physics follows Edexcel. Each year around 40 students go on to read scientific subjects, including Medicine and Engineering, at top universities. Our public examination results are outstanding.

The Faculty provides a variety of enrichment activities for our own pupils. This has produced regular successes in many regional and national competitions. The Faculty also plays a significant role in outreach to a range of primary schools, hosting an annual science competition and arranging regular teaching visits.

This is an excellent opportunity for a person with the drive and desire to make their mark on this highly important area of Forest School’s academic provision.
