Job overview

Are you an experienced educator, committed to ensuring students get the very best launch-pad to their futures?

Could you contribute to our strong pastoral team as our new Head of Sixth Form?

We seek applications from those of the Catholic faith, all faiths and of no faith but who are supportive of our Christian values and ethos.

We are seeking to appoint a suitably qualified teacher, in any discipline, to the post of Head of Sixth Form to build on the solid foundations of recent years and fully secure Post-16 education at St. Mary's as the 'Gold Standard' of our educational offer.

The right candidate would be able to lead by example - maintaining a strong whole-school presence, liaising with students, parents, tutors, teachers and SLT. They must also be strategic and innovative in their approach: purposefully driving the students to give of their very best.

The Head of Sixth Form will  lead and manage achievement, progress the attendance, behaviour, and pastoral provision and will be fully supported through the line-management by a very experienced Deputy Headteacher, supported by a range of colleagues including Sixth Form Supervisors, Futures Coordinator, and Tutor team.

This is a key management position for the school; we will do all we can to ensure that you will be a success in role.

Working at St. Mary’s is an extraordinary opportunity.  Our previous OFSTED inspection judged us as Outstanding in every category, and our most recent S48 Inspection (2018) also judged us as Outstanding in every area.  Over the last 4 years, exam results have risen at both GCSE & A Level.  The ‘Progress 8’ score for 2018 was +0.61, which puts the school in the top 10% in the country, and the 2019 also placed us ‘above average’.  At A Level the proportion of A*-B Grades as well as students enrolling at elite Russell Group Universities has risen significantly over each of the last 5 years, with a number of students holding acceptances to Oxbridge for September 2021.We are committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people, and expect all staff and volunteers to share this commitment.   Added to this, the school is also at an extremely exciting juncture in its future.  Demand is high, and owing to intense oversubscription, we will be 5 years through expansion to 6FE, with an extra-ordinary 7FE in Sept 2021.  We have also won over £7m in capital bids in the last 4 years and are enjoying brand new cutting edge facilities as a result.  The school faces an extremely strong and positive financial future.

We are passionately committed to developing staff and managing workload to ensure that colleagues enjoy their work and recognise St. Mary’s as an almost-uniquely positive place to teach and enjoy their careers.    Our Surveys this year showed that 96% of staff enjoy their work at St Mary's, 97% agree that leaders do all they can to ensure a motivated and respected staff, 100% of students enjoy their learning and believe that behaviour around the school is good, and 97% of parents would recommend St. Mary’s to other parents.  We are passionately committed to developing staff and managing workload to ensure that colleagues enjoy their work and recognise St. Mary’s as an almost-uniquely positive place to teach and enjoy their careers.

A DBS disclosure is required for all successful applicants.  St Mary’s is committed to the equality of opportunity for all applicants, and we reserve the right to interview on a rolling basis, therefore an early application is advisable.

Welcome

St. Mary’s has a strong tradition of providing an authentic education which aims to deliver excellence for every member of our Catholic community. It is our mission to build on that tradition as we develop the school still further over the years ahead.

Our school is built upon an ambitious mission for each and every young person: to fulfil academic potential; to be fully developed in the personal, social and spiritual areas of life; to achieve excellence in every area of life; and to be underpinned by Gospel Values, enabling each person to value individuals and contribute positively to society. We work in partnership with parents and the wider community to ensure that this mission is accomplished in the lives of all our young people, and in so doing, enable those young people to live life to the full.

The aims of the school are:

• the formation of our young people according to Gospel values;
• the fulfilment of the potential of our pupils in all aspects of the curriculum;
• the personal, social and spiritual development of our pupils into responsible, generous and caring members of society;
• the achievement of all these within a culture of respect and appreciation for the worth and contribution of each member of our school and its wider community.

In 1896, five Sisters from the Belgian congregation of St Mary of Namur came to Bishop's Stortford and established a school with just 9 students.  These pioneering Sisters were the first to provide Catholic education for the district, and the school rapidly became a success. Their legacy is St Mary’s Catholic School, and as we look to the future with high expectations for continued success, their vision continues to inspire us. This is expressed in our aspiration towards academic excellence founded on Gospel values. In practical terms this also means the best possible pastoral care and guidance and the challenge and support of a broad range of spiritual opportunities which permeate through all aspects of school life.
