Job overview

British School of Barcelona
Appointment of a Head

The British School of Barcelona (BSB) is one of Europe’s pre-eminent independent international schools, educating almost 1,500 girls and boys aged 3 to 18. Part of Cognita, one of the world’s largest families of schools and a member of HMC, BSB fosters academic excellence and develops well-educated, wise and confident leaders of the future. Currently based on two campuses in Barcelona, the School is expanding to three sites, the third being a Pre-University centre, which is currently being built. BSB follows the National Curriculum for England, while in the Pre-University phase, students have the option to choose A Levels or the Diploma. Most of the teaching is in English and students also study Spanish and Catalan language and culture, with local Spanish students accounting for more than 60 percent of the pupil roll.

Cognita is seeking an experienced Head with British curriculum and / or international experience to lead BSB with drive and ambition into the next stage of its development. This is an exciting opportunity to lead a multi-site and rapidly expanding international school of excellence, inspiring the community to even greater success.

The appointed candidate will combine a track record of highly successful headship experience with the learning design experience and personal impact to inspire staff and pupils alike at BSB and contribute to the broader direction of Cognita. The next Head will be a creative thinker and outstanding communicator, who is committed to academic excellence, promoting character development and nurturing a global mindset. S/he will be a visible leader, with the strategic and ambassadorial skills to further grow the School and enhance its links with the local community, as well as fostering global perspectives. A proactive willingness to embrace the many benefits of being part of Cognita is essential, as well as a genuine resonance with the School’s international ethos.

We are looking for a transformational Head, able to lead a cultural change and to pursue efficient innovation. The ability to speak Spanish would be desirable.

About The British School of Barcelona, Castelldefels

Since its foundation in 1958, The British School of Barcelona has been a leading independent school characterised by the pursuit of academic excellence as well as the importance attached to the personal and social development of each and every child.

The British School of Barcelona (BSB) is a great school in a wonderful location. We are an HMC school and were judged by our recent BSO (British Schools Overseas) Inspection to be outstanding in every category.

BSB is a large, very popular school for children aged 3 to 18. Our curriculum is based on the English National Curriculum and we offer a wide range of GCSEs, A levels and the International Baccalaureate Diploma, all alongside a significant enrichment programme.

Over 1600 pupils from over 50 nationalities attend the school and over 250 staff work at BSB. We are based in three locations: in the city centre of Barcelona itself, just outside the city of Barcelona – in Castelldefels,  and in the cosmopolitan town of Sitges.

Significant investment in recent years has seen the building of a Pre-University Centre (Nexus), a theatre, new science laboratories, a full-sized 4G rugby and football pitch and, most recently, a state-of-the-art STEM Centre.

Facilities & Location: Barcelona is one of the most vibrant, culturally rich cities in the world.

BSB City is our newest British international campus for children aged 3-18 in the heart of Barcelona city. It brings to Barcelona our international, future-facing BSB education to students from Early Years to Pre-University.

BSB City consists of two buildings that together cover all the educational stages: the Foundation Campus and the Main Campus.

BSB City is now open in the Foundation campus, an inspirational school located in Sarrià-Sant Gervasi for our youngest students.

September 2023 will see the opening of the spectacular BSB City Main Campus which will extend our provision in Barcelona for students up to Pre-University

Both BSB Castelldefels (Primary and Secondary) and BSB Sitges (Primary) campuses are minutes away from beautiful beaches and are excellently connected by public transport.

BSB Castelldefels campus offers purpose-built, modern facilities for students in Early Years, Primary and Secondary. This optimal setting supports and enhances effective teaching and learning that lead to consistently high standards of achievement.

BSB Nexus is a purpose-built campus for students aged 16 to 18. Located in Castelldefels, very close to the BSB Castelldefels campus, it provides a real-world Pre-University experience where distinct study and social spaces support independent study and encourage the development of the 21st century skills as they prepare for university and their future careers.

BSB Sitges offers a unique learning environment for Early Years (from 2-year-olds) and Primary children. The thoughtfully designed facilities provide quality learning experiences and a safe, supportive school environment where children can thrive.
