Job overview

Blackheath Preparatory School is looking to appoint an exceptional candidate as Head from September 2020. Blackheath is an independent prep school for close to 400 boys and girls aged 3 to 11. Founded in 1996, it occupies a beautiful five-acre site close to Blackheath Village and its original Georgian and Victorian buildings have been extended and adapted to include specialist teaching rooms, spacious halls, large playgrounds and extensive playing fields, tennis courts, cricket nets and Forest School areas. The School is known for its outstanding facilities, combined with a formidable academic track record, as well as dazzling achievements in music, sport, drama and art.

The vision of Blackheath Preparatory School is to be not just a good—or even very good—school but a real beacon of excellence. This means providing an exceptionally high-quality education for every one of its pupils. The School wishes the children to be happy, thoughtful, confident and responsible. The ethos of the School is purposeful and supportive, and the moral values of courtesy, consideration and care are held by all. The School’s aim is to provide an environment in which pupils can flourish, confident in the support of the adults caring for them. The culture of the School is one of immediate warmth and friendliness with positive and supportive relationships between pupils and staff. The children are bubbly and focused. In this purposeful and energetic environment, boys and girls grow up to regard learning as fun.

The Governors are looking for an outstanding Head to build on the School’s excellent foundations in order to maintain Blackheath’s status as a leading London prep school. Potential candidates will demonstrate the highest levels of teaching experience, combined with proven senior management experience, either as Head or Deputy Head. They will be capable of keeping Blackheath Prep ahead of the curve, innovating wherever possible. The appointee will demonstrate an overarching passion for intellectual, cultural and extra-curricular development, as well as an utmost focus on pastoral care and safeguarding. They will have a strong presence, commanding respect and showing emotional intelligence, inspiring confidence and encouraging staff and pupils, whilst promoting a collaborative and inclusive approach.

Our seven core values of kindness, curiosity, freedom, ambition, courage, community and joy, inform all that we do and how we behave as a school community. They guide our approach to teaching and learning, to pastoral care and to wellbeing, and our engagement with those around us.

We nurture our pupils both academically and pastorally, enabling them to be happy, confident and inquisitive children. Through a broad range of subjects, inspiring teaching and plenty of exciting activities, we ensure that our school is a really fun place to be where curiosity is stimulated, and a love of learning is encouraged.
