Job overview

Do you have a passion and skill for improving outcomes for children and young people with severe and complex special educational needs?
Currently rated as ‘Good’ by Ofsted, The Woodlands Academy represents an excellent opportunity for a Headteacher to lead, shape and influence our future and ensure our continued success.

Based in Scarborough, we are the only Special School Academy in North Yorkshire and believe we offer a more creative and forward-thinking curriculum and provision for all the pupils in our care.  We are a specialist school for children with moderate or severe learning needs, speech, language and communication needs, autism, social emotional and mental health needs and some medical difficulties.

We pride ourselves in being a warm and friendly school, our staff are our greatest resource and are highly valued for the contribution and difference they make to the lives of our pupils.

An effective leader and motivator able to inspire pupils, students and staff, you will assume responsibility for all aspects of Academy life.  This will include directing the school’s strategic planning, leading the development of the curriculum and delivering an outstanding provision which meets the individual needs of all our young people.  Innovative, creative and outward looking, the ideal candidate must be comfortable in networking situations and able to develop and influence partnerships, with a wide range of stakeholders.

To succeed, you will need a thorough knowledge of national education strategy, the wider context for Special Schools and be familiar with Special Educational Needs Code of Practice 0-25. You must also have the capability to manage finances.

In return, we can offer you strong support from your governing body, the freedom to shape the future of the school and the opportunity for your continued professional development.

Ideally geographically positioned, the stunning Yorkshire coast offers endless opportunities for exploration.  The North Yorkshire Moors National Park offers more than 500 square miles of glorious countryside with rolling moorland and majestic forests.  We benefit from the beauty of a rural setting and the close proximity of major road and rail connections, making travel throughout the region and to other major centres quick and convenient.

For an informal conversation about the role please call Rachel Wales at North Yorkshire County Council on 01609 532597.

We very much welcome school visits. If you’d like the opportunity to visit, please email rachel.wales@northyorks.gov.uk  Dates when we can accommodate visits are detailed below: if these are not possible for you please contact Rachel, we may be able to offer alternatives.
