Upton Hall School FCJ is seeking to appoint a school leader with exceptional potential to lead the school when the current Head retires in August 2018 after 21 years. This is an exciting and challenging post which will provide immense job satisfaction.
Who are we?
A Roman Catholic Grammar School for girls 11-18 with academy status, situated within the Diocese of Shrewsbury and Wirral Local Authority and a member of the Faithful Companions of Jesus (FCJ) Academy Trust. Founded by the FCJ Sisters in 1849, it has been on this site since 1864. OFSTED judged it to be outstanding. The progress of our pupils in all aspects is at the heart of all we do. The Progress 8 measure for 2017 is 0.93 reflecting the strong academic success of the school. We want our young people to become confident, independent individuals, capable of becoming their best selves by developing all aspects of their being for their own sake but also to enable them to improve the world in which they live. Music, art and drama, a wide range of sports and a thriving Duke of Edinburgh scheme provide challenges outside the curriculum. All our pupils are talented and keen to learn.
Who are we hoping to appoint?
We require a school leader able to provide evidence of making a beneficial impact on the experience of pupils in their current school and who has a passion for inspiring young people. A practising Roman Catholic committed to supporting and developing our strong ethos and able to provide an insight into pedagogy and promoting outstanding learning. Experience of promoting pupil wellbeing, positive behaviour and a commitment to enabling the school to benefit the wider community are essential. We also expect a commitment to staff CPD. Other qualities include: a sense of humour, creative approach to problem solving and a keen eye for future developments. Energy and the ability to turn powerful ideas into action will be needed. We want someone who is eager to build on our current success, finding ways of creating even more opportunities for all our pupils.
Where are we?
Upton Hall is situated on the Wirral peninsula, between the rivers Dee and Mersey extending into Liverpool Bay and the Irish Sea. Wirral is known for its rich heritage and natural beauty and its coastline provides at least two iconic views: across the Mersey to Liverpool’s UNESCO World Heritage Site waterfront and across the Dee to Snowdon and the Welsh Hills. It is rich in opportunities for leisure with golf courses, sailing clubs, and the Wirral Country Park offers an abundance of space for walking and cycling. There is a wide choice of housing, excellent schools and easy access to Liverpool and Chester via a network of roads and public transport. The school has beautiful buildings and grounds and is minutes away from the M53.

The staff are highly professional offering excellent support to student teachers and NQTs as well as pupils. Our parents are supportive and the Governing Body is committed to the school’s success acting as a critical friend. Founded in 1849, the school is able to draw on its history while looking ahead to future opportunities and challenges, with the security of financial stability. As a school with International School status, Upton looks outwards and enables its pupils to co-operate with their global neighbours. We have close relationships with the three other FCJ schools and work together for the benefit of all our pupils. About Upton Hall School FCJ
Upton Hall School FCJ is a Roman Catholic Grammar School for girls aged 11-18. It is situated in the Diocese of Shrewsbury under the Trusteeship of the Society of the Faithful Companions of Jesus, FCJ. The school has academy status. It is over 175 years since the School was founded. It was opened in 1849 by the Sisters, Faithful Companions of Jesus, a religious society founded in France by Marie Madeleine, a widow and mother who was passionate about education for young women. This passion is still in evidence as we encourage our pupils to become confident independent young women who are able to meet the demands of life in the 21st century.
We have more than 1000 pupils, including 220 members of our flourishing Sixth Form. (We welcome applications from all highly motivated students for places in our Sixth Form.)
Academic excellence is highly valued, with each pupil encouraged to develop her own talents to the best of her ability for her own sake and so that she can help to make the world a better place. As an FCJ school, we have a distinctive ethos that shapes all that we do.
Upton was judged by Ofsted to be outstanding school in the full inspection that took place in June 2022. An inspection of the Catholic Life of the school including the teaching of RE was undertaken by Shrewsbury Diocese in May 2025 which judged Upton to be an outstanding catholic school.
Upton Hall continues to develop year-on-year. Our campus-style site is spacious and allows pupils and Sixth Form students the freedom to explore and enjoy nature while they are learning. In addition to the high quality pastoral care, noted in our Catholic inspection, year-on-year Upton Hall pupils and Sixth Form students achieve outstanding examination results which put us among the top schools in the country.
Upton Hall School has a beautiful site and outstanding facilities . The Holt Building enjoys a spacious reception area to welcome you, a drama studio, technology room, classrooms, art rooms and an ICT suite. Our science laboratories, opened by the Princess Royal, are well equipped and designed to make learning an exciting experience . The original Upton Building houses refurbished staff accommodation and the Sixth Form Common Room as well as RE and Humanities teaching rooms. In September 2020 we opened a new Sixth Form centre which provides top class study facilities.
Our all-weather playing surface and top class Sports Hall with its fitness suite and dance studio on the first floor provide outstanding amenities for PE and Games. These enable pupils to excel in their chosen sports. Older pupils train to be Sports and Dance Leaders and work with Primary School pupils to help them develop their own sporting talents.
At Upton, great emphasis is placed on learning foreign languages and understanding and appreciating other cultures. The Gerard Building houses language rooms for French, Mandarin and Spanish. As citizens of the world pupils are encouraged to reflect on global issues such as Fair Trade and the movement to eliminate world poverty. At Upton we have many privileges and we recognise our duty to work to benefit others as well as ourselves.
Quite simply, Upton Hall School FCJ is a lovely place to be. Walking the corridors of our school, you can literally see and feel the history and traditions that make Upton so special. Upton was founded over 175 years ago by an inspiring woman named Marie Madeleine. At the time, her aim was to provide education for the poor and to ensure that educational opportunities for girls were equal to those available to boys. Her vision was to instil into young women a sense of moral purpose so that they could go out into the world and make a rich contribution, living out our school motto, “Age Quod Agis” which translates to “Whatever you do, do well!”. In this regard, nothing has changed, although the world around us has changed enormously.
Our mission as a Catholic school is to ensure that we help to form young people who will be good citizens of the world, loving God and their neighbour and enriching society with the uplifting message of the Gospel.
