About Us

We are a three-form entry school situated in Carshalton, which is part of the London Borough of Sutton. Our children, aged between 7 and 11 years of age, bring a wonderful amount of energy and enthusiasm to our school.

HJAC is very much a community school. We are inclusive and we strive to ensure that every child feels happy, valued and safe. Main Areas of Responsibility

As a Higher Level Teaching Assistant, your areas of responsibility will include:

  • Taking responsibility for agreed activities under an agreed system of supervision. This may involve planning, preparing and delivering learning activities for individuals/groups or short term for whole classed, as well as monitoring children and assessing, recording and reporting on children's achievement, progress and development
  • The management and development of teaching within the academy and/or management of other teaching assistants including allocation and monitoring of work, appraisal and training
  • Taking a lead role within the academy to address the needs of students who need particular help to overcome barriers to learning
  • Providing support for students, the teacher and the academy in order to raise standards of achievement for all students (e.g. SEN, EAL, More Able, all underachieving groups), by utilising advanced levels of knowledge and skills when assisting with planning, monitoring, assessing and managing classes
  • Encouraging students to become independent learners, providing support for their welfare, and supporting the inclusion of students in all aspects of academy life

Qualifications & Experience

We would like to hear from you if you have:

  • Qualifications to GCSE (or equivalent) in English and Maths at Grade C/4 or higher
  • NVQ Level 3, or equivalent
  • Good knowledge of a range of learning barriers including special needs
  • Experience of contributing to and assessing of provision for children with a range of needs
  • Some knowledge of some of the social issues facing students from disadvantaged backgrounds
  • At least two years' school-based experience as a TA, or equivalent

School summary

Harris Junior Academy Carshalton opened in September 2013. We are a three-form entry school situated in Carshalton, which is part of the London Borough of Sutton. Our children, aged between 7 and 11 years of age, bring a wonderful amount of energy and enthusiasm to our school.

We have more than 300 lively young minds at our Academy. Our dedicated teachers and support staff build on the children’s learning from the infant school to support each to be the best they can be.

In 2015, Harris Junior Academy Carshalton was rated ‘Good’ with Outstanding features by Ofsted, and we are now planning our next steps to become an ‘Outstanding’ school.

Academy Ethos

At Harris Junior Academy Carshalton we want our school to be a calm and caring learning community in which everyone feels safe, happy and valued.

We give each child all the time and attention that they need to develop their reading, writing and maths skills. We then build on this by providing the children with creative and vibrant learning experiences through which they will develop a love of learning, an ability to think independently and a desire to be the best they can be.

We want our children to leave HJAC as confident and successful learners, who understand themselves and are responsible in the way they conduct themselves.
