Job overview

We are seeking an outstanding classroom teacher to join this rapdily developing subject area.  The post would suit a NQT or a more experienced colleague with the ability to teach to A level essential.  The possiblity of a full time post exists from September 2019 or September 2010 depending on GCSE and A Level recruitment.

GCSE and A Level examination outcomes in History are a key improvement priority for the school. In 2016 the Progress score for the two classes who sat History was -0.76 FFT measure.  At A Level, the subject achieved ALPs Grade of 6, 4, 7 and 5 respectively since 2013, from 30 A2 students. Following a period working with an experienced former Head of History in 2015/16 the department has implemented a revised Key Stage 3 curriculum, which has begun to raise expectations of learning in History and increase the number of students choosing it as a GCSE Option. In 2017 A Level performance improved and an exceptionally strong cohort of 20 Year 12's were recruited to the subject. Further improvements have been seen after appointing a new Head of History in 2017 and an excellent History teacher in 2018. The school expects to return its best GCSE History results ever in 2018. ALPS Predictions for both GCSE and A Level are 3.  From its position in 2016, History is now one of the highest performing subjects in the school and is in an excellent position to enjoy further success.

At KS3, students study mediaeval kingships and the nature of warfare, as well as undertaking a Holocaust research project and themed study on the history of democracy in Britain. At GCSE, students follow the Edexcel syllabus with a focus on medicine through time, Early Elizabethan England, USA: Conflict at home and abroad, as well as the Cold War. Our A Level students follow the OCR course, focusing on Russia and its Rulers, Early Stuarts and the Civil War and the Cold War in Asia.

Students now have to choose either History or Geography at GCSE and the department intends to add Government and Politics to A Level to the curriculum in 2020.

Extra-curricular trips and excursions include a Year 8 First World War Battlefields trip, a Year 10 trip to Berlin and a Sixth Form trip to Russia. The department also has a history of supporting students in their applications to study history and history-related degrees at Russell Group universities. The department is extremely well led, highly motivated and this is an exciting time for a very strong classroom teacher to join our History Department.
