Job overview

We are an Outstanding rated, 11-18 academy based in the cathedral city of Wakefield, near Leeds from where the successful Outwood Grange Family was born; a Trust that has supported 41 schools across phases in the North of England.

We have nurtured a school community that is welcoming and friendly, where students and staff can make excellent progress together, with a focus on creating a culture of success, a positive climate for learning, and increased attainment, achievement and social and emotional development.

We believe our success speaks for itself as we are well above the national average for the number of students achieving at a Grade 5 or above in English and maths GCSEs. We are also proud to have been awarded Gold Status by the Carnegie Centre of Excellence for Mental Health Award.

Our History department is a thriving, ambitious department that is always pushing to improve our students' life chances. We are a department of 8 teachers and teach across KS3-5. We have a very solid uptake of History for GCSE and A Level and also teach Politics at A Level.

The KS3 curriculum covers large portions of history, students are taught 1 hour per week in Y7 and 2 hours per week in Y8 and Y9. In Year 7 we cover the Romans, Medieval England, the Tudors and the Stuarts. In Year 8 we cover Revolutions in the 18th Century, enslaved people, Empire, the Industrial Revolution and we do a case study on Jack the Ripper and Whitechapel. In Year 9 we cover; WWI, WWII, 1920s America, the changing nature of Britain during the 20th Century, race relations and the Vietnam War.

We are a very popular subject with 9 classes in Y10 and 9 classes in Y11. We teach the Edexcel Curriculum for GCSE covering Elizabethan England, Medicine Through Time and the Western Front, American West and Weimar and Nazi Germany. At A Level we cover Germany 1871-1991 and the Making of Modern Britain 1951-2007 as our examined areas. Our NEA point of study is the French Revolution, where students write their extended piece on the causes of the French Revolution. For A Level Politics, we follow the Edexcel Curriculum with British and US Politics and Government and then study Liberalism, Socialism, Conservatism and Feminism.

We work hard to ensure we reduce workload on staff, allowing more time in the classroom to put our vision of students first, raising standards and transforming lives into practice.

All academies within the Outwood Family have gained the IQM Inclusive Schools Award with 18 having Centre of Excellence status and one holding Flagship status.

If you share our vision, join our family.
