Job overview

Are you interested in meeting the needs of young people?

If you want a career that plays to your strengths, keep reading…..

Northampton Academy is part of United Learning, a large and growing group of schools aiming to offer a life changing education to children and young people across England. Schools within United Learning work as a team and achieve more by sharing than any single school could. Our intranet site, United Hub, is just one example of how we share resources and communicate across sites, helping to simplify work processes and manage workloads for an improved work-life balance. We reward our staff: with good career opportunities, better pay, benefits, and ultimately the satisfaction of supporting schools in their quest to give every child the opportunity to succeed and reach their full potential.

Northampton Academy requires an enthusiastic, committed and outstanding Learning Manager to join our supportive team.

The Learning Manager provides a complementary service to the Directors of KS3 and KS4 addressing the needs of pupils, supporting them in achieving their full potential and enabling the Academy to further raise standards of achievement and behaviour across the key stages. The post-holder will manage and develop their Year Group (and individual/groups of pupils within it) academically and pastorally, taking responsibility for the attitudes to learning, behaviour, attendance, punctuality, uniform, pupil development, welfare and contribution to the Academy of each student.

This is a rewarding, yet demanding role and the successful candidate will work closely with students, staff and parents in order to support our high expectations.

You should have an encouraging manner with the ability to remain calm in difficult situations, you will be resilient and demonstrate energy and drive. Furthermore, the successful candidate will have excellent verbal communication skills and an awareness of the importance of inclusion for children.

Whether you have experience of a similar role, or are a recent graduate considering working in an education or care setting, or you are looking for a rewarding career change, this could be the ideal post for you. Join the team and you will work alongside professionals from a mix of backgrounds.

You will be given roles that let your play to your strengths and you will get the support you need to flourish professionally.

Due to the nature of the role, it is likely some flexibility will be required during certain times of the academic year e.g. parents/open evenings.

Northampton Academy is a transformational comprehensive and non-selective school, serving a diverse community. We were proud to be judged 'outstanding' by Ofsted in all areas in March 2023. Our values, which underpin every decision we take, are RESPECT, DETERMINATION, AMBITION, TOLERANCE and INTEGRITY. We have a comprehensive student character-building programme, which has been nationally recognised through the Character Quality Mark Plus that was awarded in November 2021.

The leadership of the academy is completely determined to create an environment in which teachers can get on with their core role: delivering excellent lessons. To this end, the student behaviour system is clear and simple and easy to administer in lessons. If action is needed beyond these simple steps, the pastoral and senior teams take all the burden away from the teachers, conducting detentions, following up and dealing with parents on your behalf. Teachers at the academy speak of this as one of the major benefits of working here. In addition to this, teachers are trusted to be professionals through:

  • A genuine ‘flexi-working’ approach with at least one opportunity a week to come in      late or leave early for every teaching member of staff
  • No unannounced observations
  • No lesson grading
  • 3 extra INSET days per year for joint team planning
  • A feedback and recognition policy that lets teachers decide the best feedback mechanism for their own classes, rather than having this prescribed centrally

United Learning’s pledge, to all our academy teachers, is that by working for us you will benefit from more pay, more time and more support.

More pay…

• We pay an average of 5% above national scales – the best rates of pay in the sector

• Cash towards medical treatment

• Generous staff discount scheme

more time…

• Three extra INSET days for planning

• At least one personal day a year

and more support

• Great training for your career

• Exceptional curriculum resources

• Expert subject advice

• Support for your wellbeing
