The Oratory Preparatory School (OPS) is an independent day and boarding school providing an enriched education to boys and girls aged 2 to 13. The OPS aims to provide the best possible education for its pupils, and staff are expected to maintain a very high standard of teaching with every support from the Headmaster and the Senior Leadership Team.  

There must be a willingness to contribute fully to the life of the school and to participate in such duties as are customary for staff at the OPS.  Some of these will include cover for breakfast club, after school clubs, break and lunch duties.   

Professional Responsibilities:

  • To plan, prepare, deliver and evaluate specialist teaching to individual pupils identified as in need of additional support due to having specific learning difficulties and/or special educational needs
  • Draw up a teaching timetable in consultation with the Head of Department
  • Produce and review Individual Development Plans termly
  • Support and liaise with subject staff and tutors as necessary
  • Foster an approach of regular, good communication between parents/carers and the Learning Support Department
  • Produce pupil reports for the end of the Autumn and Summer terms
  • Monitor progress through initial baseline assessments followed by re-assessing at appropriate intervals for tracking purposes and forward planning
  • Be confident in interpreting school data
  • Be confident in providing advice and support to parents of dyslexic children
  • Attend departmental meetings as required
  • Attend whole school INSET meetings as required / appropriate
  • Making resources to meet the learning needs of pupils


Person Specification - Skills and Experience:

Essential:

  • SpLD qualification at Level 5 or Level 7
  • Experience of teaching or tutoring individuals who are dyslexic, across the Prep School age range
  • Experience of assessing pupils with a range of professionally approved assessments 
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to develop relationships with parents, educational professionals and children
  • Experience and understanding of teaching dyslexic learners using a structured, cumulative, multi-sensory literacy programme
  • Excellent organisation skills
  • Ability to use IT to a competent standard for teaching, reporting and communication
  • Ability to work one-to-one or with small groups of pupils
  • Be flexible and think creatively

Desirable:

  • Experience of supporting individuals with the development of study skills and ability to apply resources and teaching programmes to facilitate this
  • To be able to support Maths to at least lower KS2 level
