What is Mainstream Plus?

Mainstream Plus at UCC delivers a bespoke secondary educational experience for young people aged 11-16 with an EHCP, that is both appropriate and ambitious, which involves a rich, broad and balanced curriculum.

The Mainstream Plus Pathway is ambitious in its intent, to ensure that local children are educated within local schools, alongside their peers.

Uppingham Community College provides Mainstream Plus Pathway arrangements for children whose needs, as set out in their Education Health and Care plan, require bespoke, personalized education and pastoral arrangements and smaller than average class size, but who also will benefit from a mainstream experience.

We have 6 tutor groups of 30 students in each year group, and for the past 2 years we have added a 7th tutor group of 10 students, all with EHCPs; this is our Mainstream Plus class. These students are placed in this group based on their educational needs and our first 2 cohorts have progressed superbly in the nurturing environment we have created. The children in these classes are thriving at UCC because of the bespoke offer available to them and the teachers involved with delivering the curriculum for these classes have found the role incredibly rewarding.

Below are some of the key features of our Mainstream Plus offer:

  • The Mainstream Plus curriculum follows the main school curriculum, but with some adjustments based on the needs of the children.
  • Children in the Mainstream Plus class benefit from Direct Instruction lessons in English and Maths, which rapidly improves their literacy, numeracy, reading and writing skills.
  • The Mainstream Plus class have fewer teachers than their peers, which provides a level of consistency and familiarity.
  • Three bespoke classrooms have been built for these classes.
  • The children in these classes have a wide variety of needs, some are still working at Key Stage 1 or 2 levels, some are almost at their age related expectations in some subjects but need a more nurturing and bespoke environment.
