Job overview

We are seeking an enthusiastic Mathematics teacher to join our successful department. The appointed candidate would be expected to teach the full age and ability range. A desire to teach Further Mathematics would be advantageous, though not essential.

We have a very supportive Maths department, who work well together as a team and enjoy teaching the subject. The vast majority of our students really enjoy learning Maths and this is partly due to the inclusive, yet aspirational nature of the department. We have a strong history of success at GCSE and A Level, with consistently high results achieved every year. On average 65% of our A-Level Mathematicians have gained A* to B grades over the last few years and 84% of our Further Mathematicians have gained A or A*. At GCSE our results have always been close to and often above 90% grades 4 to 9 (A*-C). Last year our boys achieved 92% grades 4 to 9, which was close to our best ever set of results.

Maths has been a very popular choice at A-Level with around 60 students choosing to study Maths and typically more than 10 studying Further Maths. We value staff development, with A-Level teaching being shared across the department. This post could equally suit a newly qualified teacher, or someone with more experience, looking to join a successful and ambitious department.

We were graded Outstanding in every category by Ofsted in March 2017.

Educating approximately 1200 students, The Bishop’s Stortford High School provides a single-sex education for boys in Years 7 to 11 and has a large, thriving co-educational sixth form, with over one hundred girls on roll. In 2019, 89% of our GCSE students achieved grade 4+ in both English and Maths, contributing to a Progress 8 score of +0.16, compared to a national average for boys of -0.28. At A-Level we had a 55% A* - B pass rate in 2019 and 66% in 2020. We have a strong ethos, based on high expectations and standards for all, a committed and supportive staff who deliver high quality, engaging lessons and well-behaved students with excellent attitudes to learning.

We are due to re-locate to a brand new ‘state of the art’ school on a new site less than half a mile from our current location, in January 2023. This exciting project will provide us with a fantastic new learning environment, supported by cutting edge technology, and huge opportunities for the future.

The school provides a supportive environment in which both newly qualified and experienced teachers have excellent opportunities to develop their careers. A formidable range of extra-curricular activities are available to students which include numerous overseas trips, languages exchanges, cultural visits, first class fixture cards in all major sports, a diverse and high quality music and drama programme, DofE, Model UN conference, Young Enterprise, debating, public speaking and much more. The school places a strong emphasis on staff development and the appointed candidate can expect to gain significant enjoyment and professional fulfilment from working here.

Please complete the school's application form along with a letter of application and send both to the Headteacher's PA. Mrs D Landers, debbie.landers@tbshs.org

TBSHS is committed to safeguarding and promoting the safety and welfare of all our children and expects staff to share this commitment. A Disclosure Barring Service check is required for all successful applicants.

Educating 1200 students, The Bishop’s Stortford High School provides a single-sex education for boys in Years 7 to 11 and has a large, thriving co-educational sixth form, with over one hundred girls on roll. Last year our students achieved 84% 5 A*-C (Inc. English & Maths) at GCSE and 55% A*-B at A-Level. We have a strong ethos, based on high expectations and standards for all, a committed and supportive staff who deliver high quality, engaging lessons and well-behaved students with excellent attitudes to learning.

In March 2017 Ofsted judged the school to be Outstanding in every category.

The school’s motto: ‘Respice, Aspice, Prospice’ means we must look to the past, the present and the future. We are keen to promote traditional values of courtesy, respect and good discipline, though we also recognise the need to provide all our students with the tools they require to flourish and succeed, both now and in the future, and help them develop the skills and qualities that will ensure they are ready for the challenges that lie ahead.  Our focus is on delivering high quality, engaging lessons and providing students with the care and guidance that allows them to succeed.

We combine this with our extremely successful and wide-ranging enrichment programme, in which all students are encouraged to participate, as we believe that leading rich and varied lives allows them to flourish.  We build positive relationships, which means all students are provided with the support they need to really engage with, and enjoy, school life.

We encourage an open flow of communication between school and home so that parents really feel in touch with their child’s development. TBSHS is an active member of the Bishop’s Stortford Education Trust (BSET) as we feel that collaborating locally brings many mutual benefits to each school.

We are fully committed to preparing our young people to be thoughtful, capable, responsible citizens of the future. We provide a ‘Truly all-round education’ and we firmly believe this to be a great school and a special place for children to learn and grow.
