Media Studies Teacher

The post and the Department

This is an opportunity to join a very successful, academically ambitious and growing department in d’Overbroeck’s Sixth Form.  Media Studies has proved to be a very popular course and this year we have two groups in year 12. Next year, it looks like it will grow again in year 12 and year 13. The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to the planning, teaching and assessment within the EDUQAS Media Studies specification.

For a number of years, we taught Communication & Culture, and our students regularly achieved 100% A*-A at A-level. Now we have switched over to Media Studies and we expect that our students will continue to do well in the new subject.

Our students achieve these results because we have encouraged them to go beyond the specification to actively engage with the media they consume, rather than the media we as teachers consume, and with the wider issues facing the media in today’s culture.

We do this through a discussion-led approach in our lessons and a weekly blog to which the students are expected to contribute. We provide extra-reading and watching for the students to stretch themselves with. 

There is also a growing programme of events and trips to help stretch and extend our students thinking. This term, for example, we have a talk by a leading investigative journalist about his involvement in a campaign to free a death row prisoner and a seminar led by a journalist-turned-academic on George Orwell and the media.

We also encourage our students to take the Extended Project Qualification (EPQ), and projects have ranged in the past from Mad Men and the crisis of identity through to the cultural significance of Black Lives Matter. 

Person Specifications and Qualifications

We are looking for a suitably qualified, talented and ambitious teacher of Media Studies who will join the department during an exciting period of growth.  

We are very happy to receive applications from newly qualified teachers or graduates who hope to enter the profession but don’t have a PGCE. NQTs receive a full induction programme through ISTIP (http://istip.co.uk/) with the support and guidance of senior members of staff. Graduates who have not completed a PGCE receive an extensive in-house training programme. We pride ourselves on our ability to offer support and training to NQTs and recent graduates. 

d’Overbroeck’s does not require that its staff possess a PGCE or equivalent formal teaching qualification, though many members of staff have an appropriate qualification. 

The ability to teach a second subject, and in particular Sociology, would be a significant advantage.

Salary and hours

The school has its own salary scale (above the national scale) and pension scheme. There are additional responsibility awards for senior Sixth Form pastoral responsibilities.

The advertised post is a part-time one, but the School is always willing to consider applications from teachers who wish to work a larger part time position should they be willing to take on teaching in a second subject.
