Job overview

The Middle and High School (MHS) Principal is responsible for leadership and management within the MHS section of the school and for promoting the achievement of excellence in international education in line with the school’s ethos and guiding statements.

In particular, the MHS Principal:

• is a member of the School Leadership Team, working collaboratively with the Primary School Principal and reporting directly to the Head of School;

• is responsible for supporting, facilitating, motivating and organising the work and the staff in the MHS division;

• has oversight of the MHS curriculum, timetable, calendar and the well-being of the students (Grades 6 to 12);

• acts as the Head’s representative or delegate in all matters specifically related to the Middle and High School;

• leads, but is not ultimately responsible for, teacher or administrative recruitment within MHS (which remains the Head of School’s responsibility)

General responsiblities:

Effective leaders help everyone to make an impact on the quality of learning, teaching and achievement. They lead and facilitate professional learning communities for all learners to engage in conversation and dialogue about learning and teaching, attainment and achievement, progress and assessment. They also create a culture where staff are empowered to contribute beyond their remit and show initiative in taking forward learning and teaching.

The MHS Principal will therefore :

• model the leadership skills to work with the members of St. John’s community to inspire and motivate students, staff and all other members of the school community. This includes core international educational values, moral purpose, and respect of the community’s cultures, values and beliefs;

• model and promote the school’s vision, mission and values;

• model and promote the school’s curricular and philosophical commitments as an IB World School;

• lead the MS/HS School Leadership Team in developing and attaining its goals;

• ensure that at all times the school’s curriculum provides a safe, supportive learning environment for students and teachers;

• promote a culture where diversity is encouraged and where students learn to respect differences, take responsibility for their actions, exercise leadership and strive for academic excellence;

• engage with teachers, students and the school community to create a thriving, dynamic, aspirational, academic culture – a professional learning community grounded in collaboration, focused on improving learning outcomes, and driven by data-led decision-making

The specific functions and responsibilities of the Middle and High School Principal are:
