JOB GOAL/PURPOSE:

 In collaboration with the Library team, the Middle School Library Media Specialist is focused on developing independent research skills, supporting literacy and librarianship as well as overseeing the operation of the MSHS Library Media Center. DUTIES / RESPONSIBILITIES: The librarian has three major roles at ISB.As Curriculum Instructional Leader, the librarian: 

  • Has an exceptional knowledge of curriculum, teaching strategies and students' learning styles 
  • Is involved in curriculum planning and school curriculum committees 
  • Works closely with Administration and all faculty to ensure information literacy outcomes are a major school focus 
  • Raises staff awareness of the need for students to acquire information literacy skills and of the importance of resource-based learning in developing these skills 
  • Promotes the use of the inquiry process as a framework for the development of information skills and as the basis for systematic monitoring of students' development as information users 
  • Plans, teaches and evaluates collaboratively with teachers to ensure the effective integration of information literacy resources and technologies into student learning 
  • Maintains literacy as a high priority, engaging students in reading, viewing and listening for understanding and enjoyment 
  • Is knowledgeable about literature from different cultures and genres

As Information Specialist, the librarian:

  • Provides access to information resources through efficient and well-guided systems for organizing, retrieving and circulating resources 
  • Provides training and assistance to students and faculty in the effective use of these systems 
  • Provides specialist assistance to students using technology and information resources in and beyond the school, and for independent research 
  • Devises activities which actively promote students' interest in books and reading (e.g. book fairs, visiting author, etc.) 
  • Actively promotes parent and community interest and support of children's reading through parent group meetings and articles to the community. 

As Information Services Manager, the librarian: 

  • Supervises and evaluates library staff 
  • Attends professional developmental opportunities and training workshops 
  • Develops and implements strategies for evaluating the resource collections and for determining curriculum and student needs within the context of identified school priorities 
  • Develops policies, procedures and criteria for selecting resources and building collections that meet curriculum, informational and student recreational needs 
  • Develops information systems and services responsive to student and teacher needs 
  • Leads the thinking in library design and organization of different library spaces
  • Develops and manages the Library budget
  • Ensures that day-to-day administration of the Library Media Center is efficient and that systems, resources and equipment are well maintained 
  • Ensures that displays are attractive and timely 
  • Provides a stimulating, helpful environment that is a focal point and showcase for students' learning achievements 
  • Promotes the effective use of resources and information sources, systems and services within and beyond the school 
  • Solicits and oversees the work of parent volunteers

Attends:

  • Middle School faculty meetings
  • Departmental level planning meetings (as needed)
  • English/Language Arts Vertical Articulation Team meetings (as needed)
  • Library Media Specialist team meetings
  • Learning Connections meetings

Collaborates with:

  • Middle School Administration and Staff
  • Educational Technology Facilitators
  • Office of Learning curriculum related positions
  • Director of Chinese

Supervises:

  • Library Media Center staff

Engages:  

  • In professional learning to support their own learning and the various initiatives of the school.  
  • In positive relationships to continue the development, implementation, and assessment of the ISB curriculum and school-wide teaching and learning priorities.  

Performs other duties as assigned.  

Skills & Requirements

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED: 

  • Qualified / certified librarian 
  • At least 2 years full time experience as a school librarian
  • Excellent organizational skills 
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills 
  • Knowledge of Reader's/Writer's Workshop models
  • Able to work well with students, peers and parents
