Job overview

Currently, Midlothian has 6 secondary schools, 30 primary schools (19 of which have nurseries) and 2 stand alone nursery schools. Our special school, Saltersgate, provides support for children with a range of physical, social, emotional, behavioural and learning difficulties. The schools range in size from our smallest primary school with around 20 children to our largest secondary with over 1200 pupils. We have a diverse range of school catchments, from rural to urban settings. We are fortunate to have a growing number of new build schools, with 13 of our primary schools and 1 secondary having been built within the last 10 years and several new builds planned.

St David’s High School Dalkeith is looking to appoint a committed and enthusiastic Teacher of Nurture, to run our newly developing Nurture Base which is central to our whole school nurture approach adopted at the start of 2017 academic session. The successful candidate will join a successful and dynamic Support team in Midlothian’s most improved secondary school.

Our current roll stands at around 600 drawn from the towns and villages across Midlothian and from Musselburgh and south Edinburgh. We have a high number of placing requests every year from families who are attracted by the caring and inclusive ethos of the school built, on our ASPIRE values of Achievement, Service, Perseverance, Inclusion, Respect and Excellence. Our students are our greatest assets and we are very proud of their successes and achievements, particularly their consistently outstanding SQA Exam attainment.

The school management team consists of Headteacher; 2 Deputy Headteachers; 9 Principal Teachers (Curriculum Leaders); 3 Heads of House and a Principal Teacher - Inclusion.

In recent years we have enjoyed recognition nationally for our work on building resilience in our learners working in partnership with Napier University and our cluster primary schools. Our students also enjoy opportunities to participate in a wide variety of extra-curricular activities including trips both abroad and closer to home and we are rightly renowned for the quality and standard of our musical performances, productions and achievements.

We are fully committed to implementing the work of Hattie’s Visible Learning and Dweck’s Growth Mindset in our learning and teaching strategies and are also taking a whole school approach to embedding Nurturing principles in all aspects of our work.

All teachers in the school have their own classroom (including science labs) and we are very fortunate with other resources for staff and students including an iPad/student ratio 1:4 and every member of staff being provided with their own iPad.

The school shares a Campus facility with Dalkeith High School; Saltersgate Special School and Woodburn Primary School and is situated at the east end of the Edinburgh city bypass approximately ½ hour from junction 3 of the M8 and 30 minutes from Edinburgh city centre.

For further information or an informal discussion, please contact Donny MacDonald, Headteacher on 0131 654 4702.

Interviews for the above post will take place on Monday 25 June 2018
