The William Henry Smith School is a non-maintained residential special school for boys aged 5-19 experiencing complex Social, Emotional, and Mental Health challenges (SEMH). Our students have a breadth of special educational needs, including learning difficulty and disability. We are a not for profit charitable organisation providing ‘Ofsted Outstanding’ education, therapy and care. Our vision is to ensure opportunities for success are provided through a diverse programme of bespoke individual learning pathways and life skills across the 24 hour curriculum which serve to develop resilience and skills for life-long learning, happiness and an improved quality of life. Due to the continued expansion of our provision, including the purchase of two further properties in the local community and considerable development of commissioned services a newly developed role has arisen for an experienced Painter and Decorator who qualified to NVQ Level 2 or equivalent.  You must be a highly motivated person who can work effectively, in a flexible and fast paced environment, as part of our expanding Premises Team.  


The post holder must be able to prioritise, manage and organise their own workload and ensure the school has a high-quality environment at all times.  A strong work ethic, reliability and self-motivation is essential for this role.  

The role will involve the implementation of a programme of planned maintenance of painting and decorating across our 3 sites.  The successful candidate will be required to understand and follow Health and Safety Guidance and ensure that the practices and procedures are conducted in line with legal compliance needs applicable to the school. 

We expect the appointed person to be skilled in all aspects of COSHH. The role will require close working relationships with The Premises Manager and our established maintenance team in.  The candidate will ideally also have a first aid qualification and Level 4/5 or Grade C or above in Numeracy and Literacy would also be desirable.  A full driving license is also essential.

The successful application will:

• Hold a NVQ Level 2 in Painting and Decorating or relevant equivalent qualification

• Be educated to level 4/5 or grade C and above or above in numeracy and literacy or equivalent 

• Be able to work on their own and using own initiative

• Be confident and highly motivated

• Ideally have experience of working as part of a team

• Be honest, trustworthy, reliable and act with integrity

• Will be committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people

• Have a positive attitude and mind-set, embracing the positive physical and mental health and wellbeing ethos. This includes role modelling self-care and reflection as part of our wider curriculum
