The School

Established in 1894, Oporto British School is proud of the fact that it is the longest-established British School in mainland Europe. It follows the Cambridge Curriculum at KS3, leading to IGCSE and later the IB Diploma programme. Our pupils have achieved outstanding IB Diploma results in recent years, which have been amongst the best in Portugal. The school, while being conscious of its British foundation and traditions, is very much an international school of the 21st century. The school has undergone a very successful ISI inspection and is COBIS and CIS accredited. Oporto British School is open and friendly. Excellent relationships are evident throughout its close knit, supportive community, which is often described as being ‘like one big family’. Our enrolment is currently around 550 students.


The Position

The Pastoral and Safeguarding Lead is one of the key positions at Oporto British School. As Designated Safeguarding Lead, the post holder will be responsible for the coordination and promotion of pastoral care and safeguarding best practice throughout both Primary and Secondary sections of the school, and in liaison with all stakeholders, for the promotion of welfare amongst students and staff. The post holder will be responsible for keeping all stakeholders up to date regarding developments and best practice within the ambit of safeguarding and welfare, and for the delivery of appropriate training for all concerned. 

The post holder will manage Heads of House in their roles as Key Stage Pastoral Coordinators, the Primary Pastoral Coordinator, the School Counsellor, and will work closely with tutors. The post holder will chair regular meetings of key stage coordinating groups as well as Pastoral and Safeguarding meetings with Senior Leadership at OBS.

About Oporto British School

Oporto British School is a mixed, non-selective, non-denominational independent, international, bi-lingual, all-through school in Portugal, serving students from the age of 3-18. The all-through school is situated in Porto.

Oporto British School opened in 1894 as an all-boys school. In 1902, non-British boys were accepted, while girls joined from 1914. It holds title as the oldest British school in Continental Europe, and welcomes pupils from over 20 nationalities each year. It follows the English National Curriculum, with students from the age of 6 being introduced to the Cambridge Primary Curriculum, and later Cambridge Secondary Curriculum. Pupils are taught both English and Portuguese, setting them up for extended opportunities across the world.
