Job overview

The Role

This is an opportunity for a highly motivated and skilled sports person to join the PE department at Fernhill School. We place a high emphasis on PE and sport offering a wide range of sporting activities, and all students actively participate in lessons. We are keen to appoint the best teacher, therefore you need to be able to demonstrate excellent sporting skills, irrespective of sport. You will be joining a well led and dedicated team. Teachers that are passionate about their subject motivate students therefore you will need to show a passion for sport and an interest in engaging all students in physical activity. A keen interest in extra-curricular activities is expected and a willingness to run clubs is essential. While the main focus is the development of practical skills needed in various sports, the skills of organisation, teamwork and leadership play a vital role in developing young people. We have a good tradition of developing talent and students have gone on to represent GB in their chosen sport. Our students are lively, keen to learn and characterful. The successful applicant will be able to demonstrate independence, resourcefulness, great commitment and enthusiasm alongside the willingness to work as part of a tight knit team.

The School

We are proud of our reputation as a small, friendly school, built on strong, traditional values, where exceptional pastoral care, the acceptance of others and the celebration of diversity and excellent academic achievement for all are the cornerstones of our success. We have a committed, loyal and talented team of leaders, teachers and support staff.

The Physical Education Department

The Physical Education department has 4 members of staff who all teach a wide range of sports. Fernhill has good sports facilities, with extensive football pitches, a modern Sports Hall, large Fitness Suite, a School Gym and outside courts for netball and tennis. PE is popular and a number of students study it at GCSE.

We have a committed, loyal and talented team of leaders, teachers and support staff. Bohunt Farnborough is a vibrant school that supports the development of the whole child and celebrates success in the widest sense.

Our ethos is simply;

‘Be the best you can be’

The key principles that underpin our ethos are the values of Confidence, Independence, Respect, Aspiration, Honesty, Community, Equality and resilience.

  • Confidence - to think positively and to try things, even when learning is hard
  • Independence - to develop organisation, time management and thinking skills so that  we can be self-sufficient, overcoming challenges ourselves
  • Respect - all members speak politely to each other and value everyone
  • Aspiration - to be the very best you can be, rewarding effort and hard work
  • Honesty - to be trustworthy and know right from wrong
  • Community - a sense of belonging
  • Equality - ensuring that every individual has an equal opportunity to make the most of  their lives and talents
  • Resilience - not giving up, sticking with something to overcome hurdles

We are a fully comprehensive school with students from all backgrounds and abilities. Key to the continued improvement of the school is in ensuring the most able are supported and challenged, and we have a significant number of students who are talented and gifted.

In January 2024 we embarked on the next exciting phase for our school by converting to an academy, and have joined the high-achieving Bohunt Education Trust (BET) family of schools. This move ensures that we are part of a community that provides excellent education, shares best practice and provides experiences and exceptional opportunities for all of our students. We acknowledge that we are on a journey of improvement, which is well underway and are looking for dedicated teachers who wish to play a part in the improvement of the whole school.  This is a team approach and it is often commented upon how warm and welcoming staff are, and how well supported they feel. We are committed to becoming a great school and our motto of ‘be the best you can be’ applies equally to staff and students.

Bohunt Farnborough is a mainstream, non-selective, community state secondary for girls and boys aged 11-16. The school is located in Farnborough, Hampshire and has good transport links via the M3 and A331.
