About this job

Prevent is part of CONTEST, the Government’s counter-terrorism strategy.

The Education section is a vital component of Prevent activity and has a key role to play in helping safeguard children and young people from extremism and radicalisation.

This is a high-profile role responsible for supporting schools, and education providers in Barking and Dagenham, working as part of the Council’s Prevent Team.

Duties of the Prevent Education Officer include:

  • supporting and advising schools and education providers to develop policy and practice;
  • working with schools and partner agencies to recommend and deliver training packages and teaching resources;
  • engaging with young people to raise awareness of the risks of extremism and radicalisation and to increase their resilience.

We are seeking to appoint a person who understands the education sector and is credible and effective both when advising school leaders; and when engaging directly with children and young people.

Applicants should show understanding of and commitment to partnership and multi-agency working and community engagement. Qualified Teacher Status is desirable but not essential. Candidates should have experience of working professionally with young people and of managing successful projects and should be prepared to work occasional evenings and weekends.

This contract is fixed-term until the end of March 2019 in the first instance, with the possibility of extension.

The successful candidate must be willing to obtain security clearance (SC enhanced level) and checks on online presence.

Please note that this post is exempt from the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974, and is subject to a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check.
