Day Waterman College seeks to appoint a dynamic and talented principal ideally for January 2020. However, for the right candidate, a later start date would be possible if necessary.


THE SCHOOL

Day Waterman College is a leading independent full boarding school in Nigeria. Situated near the town of Abeokuta, approximately 1.5 hours by road from Lagos, the school was founded in 2008 by Nigerian philanthropist, the late Mr. Tayo Aderinokun, with the aim ‘to surpass the most demanding standards available anywhere in the world’.


The school is coeducational and educates students from eleven to sixteen years of age, following the National Curriculum of England and Wales at Key Stage 3 and IGCSE at Key Stage 4. Day Waterman is a recognised centre for both Edexcel and Cambridge International Examinations (CIE). Academic standards are high with 40% of all IGCSE grades awarded in 2019 being at A* and 68% at A* or A. 83% of all grades awarded were in the range of A* to B and 96% in the range of A*- C.


The school campus extends over 35 hectares of natural landscape and is fully purpose built. In addition to well-equipped classrooms and ten comfortable boarding houses, there are extensive playing fields, a multipurpose hall, a large dining hall, a modern science department with an observatory, drama studio and swimming pool. Academic staff live on site and occupy comfortable and modern accommodation.


There are currently around 350 students with ample opportunity for further growth. Teaching staff come from both Nigeria and other countries and the school employs around 170 teaching and support staff in total.

 

THE ROLE

The Principal is responsible to the Board for all aspects of the running and development of the school. These areas include learning and teaching in Key Stages 3 and 4, the delivery of a full boarding experience to include a high standard of co-curricular provision, oversight of the deployment of budgets and monitoring expenditure, development and maintenance of the campus and all aspects of marketing and public relations.


The Principal is supported in his/her role by two Vice Principals (Pastoral and Academic), a Director of Studies, Heads of Boarding and the school’s Chief Finance Officer. The Board of Directors is pro-active in its role and provides support through a number of key sub-committees that look after different aspects of the school’s operations.

 

THE PERSON

The Board of Governors is seeking to appoint a talented and experienced professional to this key role. It is expected that the successful candidate will have broad experience of teaching and be a proven educational leader at the levels of deputy headteacher and/or headteacher. Prior experience of a full boarding environment is desirable; international experience will also be an advantage.

The person appointed will be a flexible and internationally-minded individual, able to work in different cultural settings.

It is also expected that the successful candidate will:

  • Hold a good university degree
  • Have QTS (Qualified Teacher Status) in his/her home country
  • Ideally have a masters’ degree in an educational field
  • Show evidence of ongoing CPD and personal development
  • Hold the UK National Professional Qualification for Headship (NPQH) or equivalent (desirable but not essential)


An attractive remuneration package is offered with this post. A commensurate salary will be offered, paid both internationally and a proportion in Nigerian Naira to cover local expenses.


The Principal occupies a large and well-furnished house on campus with domestic help and sole use of a car and driver. There is a doctor and nursing team resident on site and international medical insurance is also offered.

Day Waterman College is a co-educational independent secondary school. It is based in Ogun Sate in Nigeria. 

Whilst Day Waterman College provides a UK-based education programme, it is located within Ogun State and as such follows the directives issued from the Ogun Ministry of Education. The school also has a Learning Resource Centre located at the heart of its campus.
