The Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology Graduate University (OIST; see www.oist.jp) is a dynamic new graduate university of science and technology in Okinawa Prefecture, Japan. The university is located on 85 hectares of protected forestland overlooking beautiful shoreline and coral reefs. The campus is striking architecturally, and the facilities are outstanding (OIST campus video tour). There are no academic departments, which facilitates multidisciplinary research. Outstanding resources and equipment are provided and managed to encourage easy access and collaboration. Division Function/Position Summary:

OIST now has almost a thousand people studying or working on campus, and their overall wellbeing is seen as a key to their success at OIST and the success of OIST as an institution as well. In this regard, the University Community Services Division oversees campus community services that enhance lives of students, staff and families at OIST. The Division is responsible for the management of existing welfare services including: the Child Development Center, the Ganjuu Wellbeing Service, the Resource Center and the development of Recreation Services. Some of these sections are financed through fees collected from the users of the services as well as the government subsidies to the University. Staff members in this division strive to foster a spirit of teamwork where ideas are welcomed, conflicts are resolved in a positive and respectful manner, and diversity is valued.

The School Age Programs - Program Director is responsible for the design and implementation of programming as well as efficient and effective office operations, including oversight of staff for the School Aged Program (after school and holiday programs). Over the next two to three years, the number of children in these programs will steadily increase as will the number of different programs offered. The successful candidate will be an effective team member, communicator, listener and decision-maker.

Report To: Senior Manager of University Community Services

Responsibilities:

  • Oversee the planning, coordination and evaluation of engaging and developmentally appropriate programs
  • Provide onsite supervision of, and program implementation for, school age children in small and large groups
  • Maintain an effective, well-organized and safe physical setting for the school age programs
  • Create the schedule for all after school, summer and holiday programming
  • Observe behavior, assess its appropriateness and apply appropriate behavior management techniques
  • Develop and deliver appropriate staff training
  • Ensure all administrative tasks related to registration, payment and enrollment for all programs are performed in a timely, accurate and effective manner
  • Adhere to organizational policies, procedures, and goals
  • Work collaboratively with the broader University Community Services stakeholders
  • Act as a liaison for vendors, as necessary, and evaluate their quality and performance
  • Communicate with families regularly, responding to emails and phone calls in a timely manner

Qualifications:

  1.  Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college/university, required
  2. 3-5 years’ experience in developing and implementing programs for children and/or young people
  3. Excellent organization, planning and administrative skills; sound fiscal management abilities
  4. Understanding of child development
  5. Excellent communication skills
  6. Native level English (writing, reading and speaking)
  7. Effective computer skills including experience with MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint); ability to track data and produce reports
  8. Commitment to diversity and inclusion

Term & Working hours:

Term: Full-time, fixed term appointment for 2 years. Contract initially with 3-month probationary period (inclusive). This contract may be renewed. 

Working hours: 7.5 hours per day, 5 days per week (Mon-Fri); 10:00-18:30 for after school programs; either 07:30-17:00 or 09:00-18:30 (with longer lunch breaks) during holiday programs

Compensation & Benefits:

Compensation in accordance with the OIST Employee Compensation Regulations.
